AASD Weekly Update 01-04-18

NEW ITEMS

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AASD MEMBERS!!
Welcome back and welcome to a new year!  The AASD Board of Directors and Office Staff wish you a year of good health, personal and professional success, happiness, and time well-spent with family and friends.  We look forward to continuing to serve on your behalf.  We hope 2018 is a wonderful year and one that brings good things your way!

  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL AASD MEMBERS REGARDING WORKERS COMPENSATION.   If you are hurt on the job, you must report it...and report it accurately.  Even if you think you are not going to need medical attention, you must report your injury.  Over the past couple of years, AASD has assisted AASD members who were legitimately hurt at work, but failed to report timely and/or accurately. Their cases were sent to the District Attorney for criminal charges and prosecution (workers compensation fraud), followed by disciplinary action by the District.  When AASD asked the members why they didn’t report timely or accurately, the responses were that they didn’t want the stigma of being a person who is hurt on the job as they felt it would affect their ability to promote!  In fact, one went as far as to say that employees are discouraged by their supervisors to file workers compensation claims.  This is troublesome and concerning to AASD.  If you are hurt on the job, report it immediately, no matter how minor the injury may seem. Be sure the dates reported are accurate.  On the flip side, also be sure that all employees that report to you follow proper procedures for reporting.  Please – never make an employee feel bad about reporting a legitimate work injury!

  • FREE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY .  The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and the California Association of African-American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA) are hosting a free leadership academy designed to prepare African-American and other educational professionals to advance in their careers as administrators and to help them build a leadership network for peer-to-peer mentoring, coaching, and career guidance.

The three-hour academy will include panel discussions that share the career paths undertaken by African-American superintendents to become school leaders in California, as well as presentations from leading search firms and legal experts

  • CONTINUED MEMBERSHIP IN THE ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS (ACSA).  As was reported in June, the District notified AASD that they will no longer pay their share (50%) of the ACSA dues for AASD members.  For the past three years, AASD and SDUSD had an agreement whereupon the District paid 50% of the cost of ACSA dues and AASD paid 50% of the cost of ACSA dues.  All AASD members were then provided with membership in ACSA, as well as professional development activities as part of the agreement.  The agreement ended 6/30/2017.

There are many benefits of continuing to be an ACSA Member – as detailed in this handout (click on link).   ACSA is offering a one-year special for AASD members of membership for one dollar ($1) per day.  Dues are deducted 10 times a year (September-June).

If AASD members are interested in continuing membership with ACSA, please complete the application (click on link) and return it via e-mail to Deborah Burke, ACSA, at dburke@acsa.org. Please review the attached summary of benefits sheet for ACSA membership (click here).
