AASD Weekly Update 06-25-2020

NEW ITEMS

  • DO YOU WANT YOUR INPUT REGARDING IMPACTS AND EFFECTS OF SCHOOL REOPENING HEARD?
Within the next couple of weeks, AASD will be entering into bargaining with the District regarding the Impacts and Effects of the School Reopening plan.  Mandatory subjects of bargaining are those that directly impact wages, hours or working conditions (or terms and conditions of employment).  As we go into bargaining, AASD would like to hear our members' thoughts/concerns/input on issues that fall within the mandatory subjects of bargaining.  Please consider attending (on Zoom) one of the sessions below.  These sessions are for AASD MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING ONLY.  Non-members, affiliate members or retired members may not attend.

To sign up to attend one of the Zoom input sessions, please go to the appropriate category below (classified or certificated) and click “join Zoom meeting.”  You will be prompted to give your name, e-mail address and title, and you must pre-register to attend.  An e-mail will go to the meeting host who will then respond with a confirmation (this is necessary to ensure only AASD members in good standing attend).  Each session will be “capped” at 25 attendees.  If the session is full, you will be notified by the host and may select another meeting time.

At this time, there are two ways to have your thoughts/concerns/input heard by AASD – either by attending one of the Zoom meetings below or by sending AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, an e-mail to
donis@aasdcs.org to share your input.  If your input is very specific to your personal situation or job duties, it might be best to e-mail Donis with those specific issues.  AASD has decided against a mass survey at this time.

We will keep members up to date regarding bargaining via the AASD Daily or Weekly Update which is sent to all personal e-mail addresses.  The Daily Update goes out Monday-Friday in the afternoon.  The Weekly Update goes out on Thursday’s before 12 noon.

The meeting sign up is below.  AGAIN, PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.  The dates and times of the meetings are:

    Classified:
    June 26, 1-2pm

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Outlines Efforts to Explore Data on School Police, Expand Understanding of Ethnic Studies
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond on Wednesday outlined two upcoming efforts the California Department of Education (CDE) will lead in the coming weeks as schools tackle questions surrounding educational equity and racial justice.

The first effort will accelerate research into the impacts of the presence of law enforcement on school campuses, the findings of which will inform specific policy recommendations.

The second will be the launch of a series of Ethnic Studies webinars for students, families, and educators to familiarize themselves with the histories and contributions of oppressed populations.

“As our state and nation confronts difficult conversations about racial justice, it’s evident that schools are uniquely positioned to tackle some of these issues head-on,” said Thurmond. “Like our communities, our schools are also reckoning with the best ways to navigate police reform and an honest accounting with our nation’s complex history.”

An archived broadcast of the full media check-in can be viewed on the
    CDE’s Facebook page.

Here is a brief recap of the State Superintendent’s announcements:
School Safety and Equity: Superintendent Thurmond will hold a public hearing
Tuesday, June 30 at 10 a.m., which will be streamed live on Facebook, that will examine the data and research that exists regarding the impacts of police programs on school campuses. This will be designed as a discussion between researchers, police organizations, advocacy groups, and legislators. CDE will utilize an existing partnership with nonprofit education organization WestEd to compile and review existing research on school police programs to inform future policy recommendations.

Groups and individuals that study issues of school policing are also invited to submit their research
    to reimaginesafeschools@cde.ca.gov

Ethnic Studies Webinars: As the CDE prepares to submit a revised Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum for public review, the State Superintendent announced he will be launching a series of virtual webinars and lessons for students, educators, and families. These lessons will feature Ethnic Studies professors in the following areas: Africana Studies; Asian American Studies; Chicano Latino Studies; and Native American Studies. • FROM RANCH EVENTS – DINNERS THAT FEED UP TO 6 PEOPLE FOR $25
Tired of cooking?  As many of you know, all of the AASD events at Marina Village and Scottish Rite Center are catered by Ranch Events.  They make and serve delicious meals!  Ranch Events has opened their kitchen at the Scottish Rite Event Center (in Mission Valley) for “take out” meals that feed up to 4-5 adults and 1-2 children for $25!  Such a deal.  And delicious, home style cooked meals.  The website is below; meals can be ordered in advance or the order can be placed on the same day, as long as it is placed by 12 noon that day.  Pick up times are 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM each day at the Scottish Rite Event Center in Mission Valley. In addition, Ranch Events has just added a family meal pick up during the lunch hour. This is a great way to take a night off from cooking and still be able to feed your family at a reasonable price.  They also have individual vegetarian meals, soups and desserts as “add-ons.”  AASD has partnered with Ranch Events for many years and we are pleased they are able to bring some staff back to work.  Feel free to share this information with anyone you wish to.  Many of our AASD members have tried the meals and the feedback has been positive.

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
