DAILY UPDATE #75 -- 7/07/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19 virus and school reopening.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.  PLEASE CHECK THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE TO ENSURE YOUR ISSUE/QUESTION/ CONCERN HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED THERE.

NOTE:  All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.

  • BARGAINING UPDATE
On Thursday, July 2, impacts and effects of school reopening bargaining began with the parties meeting via Zoom.  The District team gave a presentation on the status of school reopening and the AASD team had ample opportunity to ask clarifying questions.  AASD was clear with district officials that in order for our members to be able to implement a school reopening plan, our members must have the information and parameters sooner than later.  Much of the guidance for reopening hinges on negotiations with SDEA which have begun but are still in progress.

AASD has also begun to discuss a process in the event AASD has members who cannot physically report to a brick and mortar site due to underlying medical conditions, quarantine, risk to family members, or childcare issues.  Per district leadership, at this time, most central office employees (not all, but most) will remain working remotely and any discussion about returning to a physical site will occur after September.  If a central office AASD member is being required to physically report to work and has concerns about that directive due to underlying health issues or other restrictions, please contact Donis Coronel, AASD Executive Director.

Additionally, AASD will be proposing and taking the position that any AASD member that has to work outside of their calendar year (i.e., principal during their summer break, Vice Principal during the summer break) be compensated for working.  At this time, if an Area Superintendent is asking a principal to create a “flexible calendar” for this summer, AASD would like the Principal to contact Donis Coronel for guidance.

AASD will be bargaining this week (Thursday and Friday).  When a tentative agreement is reached, a Special Update will go out to all members.  Again, we thank our members for the input you provided into these negotiations.

  • IMPORANT FOR BSS IIIs AND POSs
Welcome back to work to all of our AASD-Represented BSS III’s and POS’s.  We know you have a huge job ahead of you and we are grateful to have such a professional and dedicated group to lead this very important work to prepare our schools for re-opening.  You’ve got this!  AASD is also well aware that some of you are challenged with the fact you are at or over the vacation cap and your site does not have the funds to pay off any vacation time over the 328-hour cap.  We know members are concerned about taking vacation time this summer with the daunting task of preparing schools for reopening looming in front of you.  Please hang tight – AASD begins bargaining on Thursday and in our proposal will be a solution to this challenge.  AASD hopes to have a bargained solution by the end of this week.  Absent any bargained agreement, you will likely be forced out on vacation as sites do not have the funds to pay off the hours over 328.  We are very hopeful for a bargained resolution!  Stay tuned for more information.  And thank you in advance for all of your hard work and dedication to the students and staff of SDUSD.  We appreciate you!

  • DISTRICT COMMUNICATIONS
The following communication was sent to Principals on July 7:

    • PRINCIPAL SITE ACCESS
      • Any principal who would like to work from their school site may do so voluntarily following health & safety guidelines. At this time, access is limited to principals only except for year-round sites.
      • Year-Round Principals may have essential clerical staff enter campus on a voluntary basis in order to complete their End-of-Year business, similar to the traditional sites. The safety procedures must be followed while on campus.
