DAILY UPDATE #79 -- 7/13/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19 virus and school reopening.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.  PLEASE CHECK THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE TO ENSURE YOUR ISSUE/QUESTION/ CONCERN HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED THERE.

  • BREAKING NEWS!  JOINT PRESS RELEASE FROM SAN DIEGO UNIFIED AND LOS ANGELES UNIFIED – SCHOOLS WILL START AUGUST 31 WITH ONLINE LEARNING ONLY
The Principals were called to an emergency meeting today via Zoom at 10:50 a.m. and notified that the 2020-21 School Year will start as planned on August 31 with online learning only.  AASD thanks Superintendent Marten and Chief of Staff Monreal for informing our school principals before the press release went out at 11:00 a.m.  There is a plan in place that was executed at 11:00 a.m. for notification of all other employees, parents, community and media outlets.  The decision to open school with online learning was made by the Superintendent after a long weekend of discussions, and the two largest districts in California joined hand in hand with the announcement.  Today’s announcement takes many factors into consideration and AASD agrees that online learning is the safest way to provide instruction and the right option for our school leaders to open school on August 31.  Today’s announcement gives school leaders the time they need to plan for a physical school reopening in the future with safety measures in place.  Thank you, Superintendent Marten for this decision.  We are grateful!

  • EMPLOYEE PREFERENCE/REQUEST FOR ACCOMMODATION SURVEY
All AASD-Represented certificated and classified managers and supervisors (including Principals and Vice Principals) should have received an e-mail on Friday, July 10 with a link to a Reopening Survey.  The survey is being conducted so district leadership can begin to ascertain who will be returning to work for the 2020-21 school year, what type of assignment is preferred (if there are choices), and to determine if any AASD-Represented Member may need to request an accommodation.  It is important to complete this survey.  Members have shared with AASD their concerns about confidentiality of the information they may need to provide to request an accommodation.  AASD has been assured by Chief Human Resources Officer, Acacia Thede, that this survey is an HR process and that all information will be kept confidential.  If a member does request an accommodation, AASD will be by the member’s side throughout the process to offer guidance and support.  The survey is due back to HR by July 17.  The links below are for the survey.  The first link is for all active AASD-represented members and the second link is for Retired Certificated Administrators who have worked in interim assignments in the recent past.

Update on July 13, 12:30 p.m.   AASD contacted Acacia Thede.  Even with the news of school reopening with online learning, HR would still like the survey completed.

The survey also went (or is in the process of going) to all other district employees in other bargaining units.  If employees have questions and ask you for advice, please refer those employees to put their questions on the survey.  HR will respond to individual questions.

If any AASD-Represented member has questions or concerns, please contact Donis Coronel prior to submitting the survey.

  • Q and A (Monday, July 13, 2020)   (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

Q -- Year round Principals should receive hazard pay. July 10th was a site access day decided long ago. 3 days of end of year drop off and distribution in July with staff and parents is hazardous, especially with spikes in ‘rona these days.
A – (Answer provided by AASD)  AASD couldn’t agree more with you.  However, when the MOU was negotiated at the end of March, AASD had no idea whatsoever that this would go on past June 30 and, therefore, AASD negotiated that as a “sunset” date for the agreement, as did all other bargaining units in SDUSD.  When April and May rolled around and we realized this would go on beyond June 30, AASD attempted to negotiate hazard pay into July to cover year round administrators and BSS III/POS; however, the district would not agree to that.

Received from Amanda Hammond-Williams, Principal, Birney Elementary --  “Thank you AASD staff and Board of Directors for your frequent and helpful communication and for having our backs....”
