  • VETERAN’S DAY – NOVEMBER 11
In observance of Veteran’s Day on Wednesday, November 11, the AASD staff will be “off-line” and will resume work on November 12.  We sincerely hope that all of you take time on this day to thank a Veteran and also enjoy a day with family and in reflection.

  • CLARIFICATION - QUESTIONS REGARDING PPI DAYS AND VACATION DAYS
The following information was shared by AASD in the November 5 Weekly Update and there are some clarifying changes below in BOLD.  Thank you to Judy Wind-Walker, our AASD member and Payroll Supervisor, for alerting AASD to an error in our communication:

Several members have asked for clarification regarding PPI days and vacation days in terms of balances and when balances must be reduced.

PPI Days – All AASD-represented employees receive four (4) PPI days annually.  PPI stands for Personal and Professional Improvement and may be used for ANY reason.  Notification must be made in advance to the member’s supervisor.  Under normal circumstances (per the AASD collective bargaining agreement) a member may have up to 12 PPI days on the books at any one time.  Four (4) PPI days are earned each July 1.  So an example is that as on June 30 of any year, a member can have eight (8) days on the books and then earn four (4) more days on July 1.  However, by the next July 1, the member must have used at least four (4) days leaving a carryover balance of eight (8) days.  When a member leaves the AASD unit (promotes, demotes, terminates, retires, etc.) the PPI days are not paid out.  Any days on the books are forfeited.  Therefore, it is always advantageous to the member to use the days. Those AASD members who are retiring in December must use the PPI days prior to their date of retirement or the days will be forfeited.

AASD negotiated an exception due to the COVID school closures, reopening, etc. as it was difficult for members to be able to reduce the balances and use the PPI days.  Therefore, all AASD-represented members have until June 30, 2022 to reduce PPI balances to eight (8) days.

Also, in tradeoff for principals and vice principals being required to work during their 2020 Spring Break, every principal and vice principal automatically earned three (3) additional PPI days.

Additionally, year-round principals and vice principals were required to work during their April “off calendar” time and also automatically earned three (3) more PPI days.

Vacation Leave Vacation leave is earned by all AASD-represented classified managers/supervisors and by central office certificated managers.  Under normal circumstances, annually each member is required to reduce their vacation balance below 328 hours by mid-August.

AASD negotiated an exception due to the COVID school closures, reopening, etc. as it was difficult for members to be able to reduce the balances and use the vacation time.  AASD negotiated that members have until August 2023 to reduce balances below 328 hours.

When a member leaves the AASD unit (promotes, demotes, terminates, retires, etc.) the PPI vacation days are paid out.

When an AASD member leaves the AASD unit (promotes, demotes, terminates, retires, etc.) any vacation days are paid out (unless the member is moving to another position in the district that is eligible to earn vacation.  If so, the vacation days stay on the books).

Summary -- Being able to extend the cap for both PPI Days and Vacation Leave means that all AASD members will need to work within their calendars and in  conjunction with their supervisors to ensure that they use PPI days and vacation days to reduce balances prior to the deadlines above.  AASD understands that at this time that sounds like an impossible task due to workload and prep for reopening schools through the various phases.  Just be aware of the expectation.
