  • DON’T FORGET TO VOTE ON OUR AASD ONE-YEAR ROLL OVER CONTRACT!  DEADLINE TO VOTE IS FEBRUARY 27 AT 11:59 PM
The 3-year AASD Collective Bargaining Agreements expired on June 30, 2020.  Due to being in the middle of the pandemic, AASD (as well as the CSEA units) made a decision to simply roll over the collective bargaining agreements (Classified and Certificated) for one year – 2020-21

Everything remains the same in the contract except for the term, which will be July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.  In addition, there is language in the classified one-year roll over regarding our AASD School Police members.

This one-year contract requires a vote of the AASD Membership.  Please click on this link to vote

The full 3-year contracts can be viewed on the AASD website at
     http://aasdcs.org/governance/contracts/.

Thank you for your commitment to AASD.  Since these one-year contracts expire in June, our bargaining teams will be engaging in full contract bargaining for the 2021-22 school year.

  • SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH COMMITTEE.   AASD President, Dr. Jolie Pickett, was appointed to represent AASD on the Superintendent Search Committee.  Dr. Pickett is the Principal at Garfield High School and has over 35 years of experience with the district.  We know Dr. Pickett will represent AASD well!   In addition, Board Trustee McQuary nominated AASD members Michael Goodbody and Ernie Remillard, and Trustee Bazzo nominated retired principal Laurie Hinzman to serve as members-at-large on the committee.

  • AGREEMENT REACHED BETWEEN AASD AND THE DISTRICT ON COVID TESTING AND INCREASING PARTICIPATION IN PHASE ONE APPOINTMENT-BASED LEARNING
AASD has reached a tentative agreement with the District on COVID Testing and Increasing Participation in Phase One.  Please click below to view the tentative agreements.

    COVID-19 Testing Program
T.A. - Certificated, Increasing Participation, Phase One
T.A. - Classified, Increasing Participation, Phase One

Note that AASD members are not required (but highly encouraged) to take advantage of COVID testing and may do so on work time.

Note that in the Phase One MOU, there is now language that gives members 80 hours of COVID leave if they become ill or must quarantine.  (The federal law that provided the 80 hours expired on December 31; however, the negotiated agreement continues the 80-hour allocation.)

Please direct any questions to Donis Coronel, Executive Director/Chief Negotiator (donis@aasdcs.org).  Thank you to the AASD Bargaining Teams for their commitment and participation.

  • AASD CERTIFICATED WORKLOAD WORK GROUP MET WITH THE DISTRICT ON FEBRUARY 22.  As you may know, AASD is the only administrator union in the state of California that has language in our contract requiring the district to meet and discuss certificated workload.  Thank you to all AASD Members in Good Standing who submitted input via the Workload Survey in late January.  Your comments were valuable and over 60% of our certificated members responded. The AASD representatives met with the district leadership on February 22.  Under the direction of Chief of Staff, Dr. Sofia Roditti, the district team came prepared and ready to explore solutions to the workload of site administrators.  Many possible solutions were discussed and the AASD team felt heard and respected.

While the district representatives need to further discuss some of the possible solutions to items that affect site administrator workload, a commitment was made by district leaders to change the Principal Update from daily distribution to Monday/Wednesday/Friday distribution and to ensure that the central office reviews deadlines where possible to ensure they are reasonable.  Also, the district committed to going back to providing a “Year at a Glance” calendar of all department deadlines/projects/etc. that affect school sites.  This Year at a Glance was produced three years ago and then was discontinued.  Site administrators need to see what is expected/due for the year so they can plan their work accordingly.  A “mini” Year at a Glance will be produced for the remainder of this school year and the district committed to having a full version for 2021-22 by June 2021 (and ongoing).  In regards to the implementation of the E3 growth and development model, the district representatives will discuss and respond if there can be any changes to the implementation.

Below is the input from the survey that was shared with the district leaders.  Remember, the survey was done prior to the rollout of the current Phase One this week and prior to SBB.

The group will be meeting monthly for the remainder of this school year.  AASD will be soliciting member input in advance of each meeting.  Please, help by taking the brief surveys that AASD sends out  – your input is valuable.

  • CONDOLENCES
AASD acknowledges deaths of our members, retirees, or their immediate family members via the Weekly Update.  If you have information on a death to be reported in the AASD Weekly Update, please contact any of the staff at the AASD office with the information.  We appreciate your help with this – we don’t always know right away when a death has occurred or the information on services.

AASD sends condolences to retired affiliate member, Debbie Foster (Chief Financial Officer, Retired) on the death of her brother, Frank Webb.  Frank previously worked for SDUSD in Human Resources and the Real Estate Office.  Our deepest sympathy to the Foster/Webb families on their loss.

  • NEGOTIATED HOTLINE FOR AASD MEMBERS IS UP AND RUNNING!  In the Return to Instruction MOU, AASD negotiated the following language:

The District will establish a “hotline” available to AASD unit members and other management who are charged with enforcing the health and safety policies and procedures where they can call or e-mail and get immediate assistance when conflicts arise, clarification is needed, or decisions must be made regarding health and safety matters.  This hotline will be available on all District workdays, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will be staffed with a person in authority who has the capability to make decisions or who has direct access to those who can make decisions.  In the rare event that a message must be left, all calls will be returned promptly, within the same day.

The Hotline is up and running.   AASD is pleased to announce that our AASD member, Brian Kenworthy, who is a classified manager (Operations Specialist) is the voice on the other end of the hotline.  Many of you know Brian as he has worked for the district for 18 years in departments such as Human Resources, Summer School/ESY, Leadership and Learning, Labor Relations, Office of the Superintendent and the Charter School Office.  Brian will be a great resource for our members and is a well-respected manager.  Thank you, Brian!

This hotline is for ALL AASD represented members, both classified and certificated.  The Hotline phone number is
    (619) 981-0760.

  • ALL AASD MEMBERS – PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS NEGOTIATED REGARDING PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT (PPI) DAYS.
Classified Members:  Under the current contract all AASD classified members earn 4 PPI days per year on July 1.  Under the current contract, AASD members may carry over up to 8 days per year.  This means that by June 30 of any year, any PPI days on the books in excess of 8 days are forfeited.  With the COVID-19 Memorandum of Understanding, an agreement was made to allow members to carryover additional PPI days.  See narrative below:

Any employee who had a PPI day balance of between 9 and 12 days on June 30, 2020 was permitted to carry over up to 4 days that they would have lost on June 30 if not used.  Days can be carried over until June 30, 2022.  Example:

Mary currently has 12 PPI days on the books.  She was planning to use 4 days before June 30, as she knew, per contract, she could only carry over up to 8 days on June 30.  She gets her annual 4 day accrual on July 1 each year.  With the school closures, she does not have the opportunity to use the 4 days.  Per the MOU, she can carry over all 12 days into 2020-21 and on July 1 will receive her 4 day accrual and will have 16 days on the books.  If she does not use any of those days during 2020-21, she will accrue 4 more days on July 1, 2021 and will have 20 days on the books.  By June 30, 2022, Mary must use 12 days to bring her balance down to 8 days on June 30, 2022.  If she does not bring her balance down during 2020-21 or 2021-22, she will lose the extra days accrued on June 30, 2022.  Moral of the Story – find a way to use PPI days or you risk losing them!  If you are in this situation with a high number of days – maybe take a day every other month for the next two fiscal years.  If you plan ahead, it should be something that can be planned for and not make a huge impact on the site/department.

Certificated Members:  Under the current contract all AASD certificated members earn 4 PPI days per year on July 1.

Additionally, in recognition of the time certificated school site administrators (principals and vice principals) worked during Spring Break, all principals and vice principals automatically received 3 additional PPI days which must be used by June 30, 2023.

In recognition of the time certificated year round site administrators (principals and vice principals) worked during their “off calendar year round” time in April, all year round principals and vice principals received 3 additional PPI days which must be used by June 30, 2023.  (Therefore, principals and vice principals assigned to a year round calendar will receive a total of 6 PPI days – the 3 from Spring Break and 3 additional).

Note to all (classified and certificated) -- due to the changes by adding additional time to use PPI days (and the additional accrual for Principals and Vice Principals), AASD strongly suggests that you keep your own records of your PPI days.  To do that, AASD suggests that you work with your timekeeper NOW to get your current balance.  If  you are a traditional principal or vice principal, add the Spring Break additional accrual (3 days) and if you were a year round principal or vice principal, add the additional 6 days.  Then all AASD members (classified and certificated) add the July 1 accrual of 4 days.  All AASD members will have until June 30, 2022 to bring their balance down to a maximum of 8 days on the books).  Remember, if you leave the District management team to a non-management position or if you leave the District, these days do not follow you and are not paid off.  If you have questions regarding the PPI days, contact AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel at
    donis@aasdcs.org.

  • FROM RANCH EVENTS – CONTINUING TO PROVIDE GREAT MEALS AT A GREAT PRICE.  TIRED OF COOKING?  CHECK THIS OUT    https://mdp-catering-events-inc.square.site/
Tired of cooking?  As many of you know, all of the AASD events at Marina Village and Scottish Rite Center are catered by Ranch Events.  They make and serve delicious meals!  Ranch Events opened their kitchen at the Scottish Rite Event Center (in Mission Valley) for “take out” meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  A dinner that serves 4 adults and 2 children is just $30 and individual meals or meals for 3 can also be purchased.  A great deal for home cooked food.   The website link is above, meals can be ordered in advance or the order can be placed on the same day (see website for more information).  This is a great way to take a night day off from cooking and still be able to feed yourself and/or your family at a reasonable price.  They also have  vegetarian meals, soups and desserts as well as group platter meals.  AASD has partnered with Ranch Events for many years and we are pleased they are able to provide this service which allows them to continue to employ staff.  Feel free to share this information with anyone you wish to.  Many of our AASD members have tried the meals and the feedback has been positive.
