AASD Weekly Update 03-25-2021

NEW ITEMS

  • GRATITUDE MESSAGE TO AASD MEMBERSHIP - FROM THE MEMBER RELATIONS COMMITTEE
During an unprecedented time, the year of the Pandemic, a year that has challenged us to think creatively about student achievement and family engagement, the coronavirus pandemic has magnified deep-rooted racial and social injustices, perpetuated educational inequities, and increased disconnection between families and educators.

Through your sharing of experiences, hopes, frustrations and needs in times of food and home insecurities, loss of work, illness – all competing for your time and resources – you have taken the unknown and with authentic concern for the realities families have been facing, you developed solutions and consistent plans that supported students, families, and your colleagues to build meaningful connections and relationships that created learning opportunities.

Your commitments continue to support the foundation to confront the challenges of distance learning and the return to in-person learning.  For all of this, we have deep gratitude.  Your success shines a light on SDUSD and AASD, AFSA Charter 134, AFL/CIO.  Your success inspires others to continue in the face of the unknown, in a manner that allows all of us to envision education emerging stronger than it was before.

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing.  It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”  -Voltaire

AASD Members in Good Standing Only are eligible to vote for AASD Officers.  To vote, click on the link below.  Voting deadline is tomorrow, Friday, March 26 at 11:59pm.

Candidate Statements are below.  You may also “write in” a candidate on the ballot.

AASD President (vote for the incumbent or vote for a write in candidate)
Jolie Pickett (incumbent), Principal, Garfield High School.  I am the principal at Garfield High School and have had the good fortune of representing you in my role as AASD President. During my tenure, I have worked with your AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, and the AASD Executive Board and AASD Board of Directors to promote excellence in our district by working to improve your professional lives. We have worked to develop strong relationships with our leadership and have secured pay increases and additional benefits. We have also joined with AFSA to develop a national voice and provide Members-in-Good-Standing with great legal and liability benefits. I would be honored to continue to serve as your AASD President to further strengthen our organization and improve our profession so that we may best serve our students and communities.

AASD Vice President-Certificated (vote for one or vote for a write in candidate)
Erica Renfree, Principal, Canyon Hills (formerly Serra) High School.   I am Dr. Erica Renfree and I have been an administrator for 8 years. I am one of the only principals that has been an administrator at all three levels (Elementary, Middle, and High School) so I understand the needs/complexities of the various levels. I am currently the Principal of Canyon Hills (formerly Serra) High School and was awarded the first ever “Ethnic Studies in Action Award” from SDUSD. I have also served on the Scholarship Committee for AASD, and I am the co-chair of the AASD Legislative and Action Committee currently, and am a member of AFSA along with being nominated for ACSA Woman Administrator of the Year for my equity work at Canyon View (Serra) and not only changing the name of the school but closing the achievement gap for students. Lastly, I just graduated from the Superintendents Academy through ACSA. I am highly interested in representing the group and am  committed to the position and will take the job seriously.

Scott Thomason (incumbent), Principal, CPMA Middle School.  I am Scott Thomason and I have been principal of CPMA for the past twelve years and before that I was the Vice Principal at SCPA (I love schools with acronyms!).  I have been in the district for over 25 years and have been serving on the AASD Board of Directors for almost five years.  For the past three years I have been the Vice President of the certificated AASD group and I also sit, as an Officer, on AASD Executive Board and serve as chair of the AASD Bargaining Team.  I love being able to give back to my colleagues and to look out for your wellbeing; working to ensure certificated management is treated fairly and that we have strong continued union leadership that represents the needs of all AASD management, and that in future years we are provided security in our jobs and relief from the endless stress we face as leaders.  I am hoping for your vote which will allow me to represent the best interests of all certificated AASD members.  Thank you.

AASD Vice President-Classified  (vote for the incumbent or vote for a write in candidate)
Jeff Thomas (incumbent), School Site Operations Specialist, CCTE.  I have worked in San Diego Unified for over 31 years.  I have worked at Middle School, High School and two district offices.  I am currently the School Site Operations Specialist in the office of College Career and Technical Education.  I have served on the AASD Board of Directors for the past decade and have been a member of the Executive Board for the past four years.  I currently have honor of being the Classified Vice President.  I have been very active on the Professional Development Committee.   I’m very proud of the work we have accomplished in AASD in recent years.  Most notably joining AFSA and starting the Political Action and Legislative Affairs committee.  I look forward to the opportunity to serve AASD in the years to come.

AASD Secretary/Treasurer  (vote for the incumbent or vote for a write in candidate)
Gina Camacho-McGrath (incumbent), Principal, Miller Elementary.  My name is Gina Camacho McGrath and I am running for the office of Secretary/Treasurer for AASD.  I have been with the district over 25 years with close to 19 years as an administrator.  I am the Principal at Miller Elementary School.  I currently serve on the AASD Board of Directors and hold the office of Secretary/Treasurer.  I am hopeful to continue the work on your behalf for another term.  I have been grateful to serve thus far and would appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve our AASD members.

AASD is sad to report the passing of Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Amparan on January 22, 2021.  Dr. Amparan was a well-respected administrator for many years with SDUSD.  At the time of his retirement in 1999, Dr. Amparan was the Director of Alternative Education.  Immediately preceding that assignment, he was the principal at San Diego High School for 17 years (1980-1997).  He also taught Educational Administration courses at San Diego State University.  Here is the link to Dr. Amparan’s obituary, which was published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on February 21, 2021.

  • NEGOTIATED HOTLINE FOR AASD MEMBERS IS UP AND RUNNING!  In the Return to Instruction MOU, AASD negotiated the following language:

The District will establish a “hotline” available to AASD unit members and other management who are charged with enforcing the health and safety policies and procedures where they can call or e-mail and get immediate assistance when conflicts arise, clarification is needed, or decisions must be made regarding health and safety matters.  This hotline will be available on all District workdays, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will be staffed with a person in authority who has the capability to make decisions or who has direct access to those who can make decisions.  In the rare event that a message must be left, all calls will be returned promptly, within the same day.

The Hotline is up and running.   AASD is pleased to announce that our AASD member, Brian Kenworthy, who is a classified manager (Operations Specialist) is the voice on the other end of the hotline.  Many of you know Brian as he has worked for the district for 18 years in departments such as Human Resources, Summer School/ESY, Leadership and Learning, Labor Relations, Office of the Superintendent and the Charter School Office.  Brian will be a great resource for our members and is a well-respected manager.  Thank you, Brian!

This hotline is for ALL AASD represented members, both classified and certificated.  The Hotline phone number is
    (619) 981-0760.

  • FROM RANCH EVENTS – CONTINUING TO PROVIDE GREAT MEALS AT A GREAT PRICE.  TIRED OF COOKING?  CHECK THIS OUT    https://mdp-catering-events-inc.square.site/
Tired of cooking?  As many of you know, all of the AASD events at Marina Village and Scottish Rite Center are catered by Ranch Events.  They make and serve delicious meals!  Ranch Events opened their kitchen at the Scottish Rite Event Center (in Mission Valley) for “take out” meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  A dinner that serves 4 adults and 2 children is just $30 and individual meals or meals for 3 can also be purchased.  A great deal for home cooked food.   The website link is above, meals can be ordered in advance or the order can be placed on the same day (see website for more information).  This is a great way to take a night day off from cooking and still be able to feed yourself and/or your family at a reasonable price.  They also have  vegetarian meals, soups and desserts as well as group platter meals.  AASD has partnered with Ranch Events for many years and we are pleased they are able to provide this service which allows them to continue to employ staff.  Feel free to share this information with anyone you wish to.  Many of our AASD members have tried the meals and the feedback has been positive.

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
