AASD Weekly Update 06-10-2021

NEW ITEMS

  • THE END OF A HISTORIC SCHOOL YEAR!  The AASD staff and the AASD Board of Directors wish all of you a peaceful and gratifying end to the 2020-21 school year.  What a historic year it has been!  We made it!  Thank you to all AASD Members in Good Standing, Affiliate Members and Retired Members for all you have done this past year for students, staff, your communities and your own families.  You have all been nothing short of amazing!  Looking forward to the 2021-22 school year.  Have an enjoyable summer!

  • PLEASE READ – IMPORTANT.   After producing 266 “Daily Updates” throughout the pandemic, Tuesday was the last issue!  AASD will revert back to providing the “Weekly Update” only, which is produced each Thursday and sent to the personal e-mail addresses of our Members in Good Standing, Retired Members and Affiliate Members. So many of our AASD members have reached out to thank AASD for keeping them informed during the pandemic.  It’s been a privilege and honor for our small but mighty AASD staff team to produce 266 Daily Updates for AASD members over the past 15 months when daily information was needed.  AASD will continue to keep members informed with the Weekly Update on Thursdays and with an occasional Special Update if there is critical information to share at other times.

  • REMINDER -- AASD REACHES AGREEMENT WITH THE DISTRICT ON BEHALF OF CLASSIFIED MANAGERS/SUPERVISORS FOR AN INCENTIVE FOR THOSE WORKING THE VARIOUS SUMMER PROGRAMS
Last week, AASD reached a tentative agreement with the District on an MOU for a Summer Incentive for select AASD Classified members who will be working one or more of the various summer programs.  The funding for the incentive comes from the federal government and can only be used for school site employees who are assigned work related to the summer program and related to health and safety.  The funding must be tied to duties related to health and safety on a school site where a summer program is being held and those eligible must be working on the school site daily.

    Please review the MOU

Please review and understand that the incentive is 2% of annual salary paid in one lump sum to those who work at least 90% of the summer program (4 or 6 weeks depending on the grade level).  There is language in the agreement that allows for a review of “extenuating circumstances” if a member is out more than 10% of the summer school time.  If any AASD member has an extenuating circumstance, please contact AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel at donis@aasdcs.org.

The incentive, per the Auditors, is likely not available for those who are not assigned to a school site summer program.  Those who provide services to a school site but are not assigned to the school site summer program on a daily basis are not eligible.

Job titles in our AASD classified unit that will qualify for the incentive (per the Auditors):

    • BSS III and POS (who are assigned to a school site; not an adult site such as IMC, Ed Center, etc.)
    • All Food Services Supervisors and Area Supervisors
    • Other AASD supervisory/management positions that are assigned to a school site and will be assigned ongoing work connected to the summer program and health/safety such as School Site Operations Specialist or Supervising Rehabilitation Specialist or School-to-Career Coordinator, etc., may be eligible.  If any AASD member is in one of these job titles or another “school site” job title and believes they will be entitled to the incentive, please e-mail AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel so she can coordinate eligibility with the District (donis@aasdcs.org).

Please direct any questions to AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel at donis@aasdcs.org

Thank you to the AASD Classified Bargaining Team for your commitment to AASD and our members:

  • CONDOLENCES
AASD acknowledges deaths of our members, retirees, or their immediate family members via the Weekly Update.  If you have information on a death to be reported in the AASD Weekly Update, please contact any of the staff at the AASD office with the information.  We appreciate your help with this – we don’t always know right away when a death has occurred or the information on services.

It is with great sadness that AASD shares with colleagues that Wangenheim Principal, Matt Fallon, unexpectedly lost his wife and best friend Donna Fallon on June 3 after Donna suffered an aneurysm.  Donna was a devoted and popular teacher at UC High School and also the ASB Advisor.

During this very sad and difficult time, Matt is focused on their three boys and asks for time and space.  He appreciates everyone’s concern so very much.  Many have asked how to help – Matt requests no flowers and meal trains are difficult as the boys don’t all eat the same things.  If so inclined, gift cards to Albertsons or Costco are appreciated.  (If you need a mailing address, please contact the AASD Office at linda@aasdcs.org or the Wangenheim Vice Principal, Susan Kent at skent@sandi.net for assistance.)

Our hearts go out to Matt and the Fallon family, as well as their school families at UC High and Wangenheim Middle.  A Go Fund Me account has been set up to benefit the three boys in their extracurricular activities and for their future educational needs. Higher education for the boys was a priority for Donna and they had already taken some family summer college tour trips.  Donations via Go Fund Me can be made at:    https://gofund.me/e44eb907

Today, Matt posted the following on both his Facebook Page and Donna’s:  “Wanted to share, though Donna would be furious- she hated being in a spotlight, that she was an organ donor. It was important to her and she would have been happy that because of how she died, there have been 4 successful transplant surgeries involving 5 of her major organs. Special thanks to the Lifeshare people for being amazing through this. I will be sharing funeral information soon and all will be welcome. - Matt Fallon”

  • UPDATE FROM RANCH EVENTS – THEY CONTINUE TO PROVIDE GREAT MEALS AT A GREAT PRICE.  TIRED OF COOKING?  DON’T WANT TO HEAT UP YOUR HOUSE THIS SUMMER?  CHECK THIS OUT    https://mdp-catering-events-inc.square.site/
Tired of cooking?  Don’t want to heat up the oven?  As many of you know, all of the AASD events at Marina Village and Scottish Rite Center have been catered by Ranch Events.  They make and serve delicious meals!  Ranch Events has opened their kitchen at the Scottish Rite Event Center (in Mission Valley) for “take out” meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner.  A dinner that serves 4 adults and 2 children is just $30 and individual meals or meals for 3 can also be purchased.  A great deal for home cooked food.   The website link is above; meals can be ordered in advance or the order can be placed on the same day (see website for more information).  This is a great way to take a night day off from cooking and still be able to feed yourself and/or your family at a reasonable price.  They also have  vegetarian meals, soups and desserts as well as group platter meals.  AASD has partnered with Ranch Events for many years and we are pleased they are able to provide this service which allows them to continue to employ staff.  Feel free to share this information with anyone you wish to.  Many of our AASD members have tried the meals and the feedback has been positive.
Effective June 1, the meals will be available Monday through Thursday only (not on weekends due to the increase in catered events).  Additionally, Ranch Events is looking for part-time staff to work Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays as cooks, servers and bartenders.  If you know of anyone looking for work please have them contact Ranch Events at 619-297-4408 or 619-944-4925.

  • NEGOTIATED HOTLINE FOR AASD MEMBERS IS UP AND RUNNING!  In the Return to Instruction MOU, AASD negotiated the following language:

The District will establish a “hotline” available to AASD unit members and other management who are charged with enforcing the health and safety policies and procedures where they can call or e-mail and get immediate assistance when conflicts arise, clarification is needed, or decisions must be made regarding health and safety matters.  This hotline will be available on all District workdays, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will be staffed with a person in authority who has the capability to make decisions or who has direct access to those who can make decisions.  In the rare event that a message must be left, all calls will be returned promptly, within the same day.

The Hotline is up and running.   AASD is pleased to announce that our AASD member, Brian Kenworthy, who is a classified manager (Operations Specialist) is the voice on the other end of the hotline.  Many of you know Brian as he has worked for the district for 18 years in departments such as Human Resources, Summer School/ESY, Leadership and Learning, Labor Relations, Office of the Superintendent and the Charter School Office.  Brian will be a great resource for our members and is a well-respected manager.  Thank you, Brian!

This hotline is for ALL AASD represented members, both classified and certificated.  The Hotline phone number is
    (619) 981-0760.

  • SEE'S CANDIES  See's is now offering gift cards instead of the paper gift certificates.  The paper gift certificates are no longer available for purchase, but if you have any of the paper gift certificates, they are still valid and will be honored at stores.

The new gift cards are available for purchase from AASD by members in good standing, affiliate members and retired members.  The gift cards are valued at $25, but the discounted cost for our members is just $21.25.  This is a savings of $3.75 per gift card!

As you know, the AASD office is closed and staff is working remotely, but we can still offer this benefit to you.  If you are interested in purchasing gift cards, simply email Linda Crout-Hamel (linda@aasdcs.org).  Please email your request and provide your phone number so she can call you to discuss your order and payment options (credit or debit card, check).  The gift cards will then be mailed to the address you provide.

In addition to these gift cards, Administrators Association of San Diego (AASD) members qualify for quantity discounts on See's candy at the Quantity Discount store on Rosecrans. To redeem your discount, show a valid photo ID, your AASD member card, and provide our account number 6472612 or the office phone number 619-295-2118.  Note:  the acronym "AASD" will not work for the business name.  This discount is only valid at 3751 Rosecrans Street, San Diego, CA 92110.

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
