DAILY UPDATE #15 -- 4/3/2020

  • AASD Office Closure

AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues and the COVID-19 virus.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns is:
    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVSsqBQSHboCdgqbnpaucUY--DHKjosG8MAmRuCxawzB4blg/viewform?usp=sf_link

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.  PLEASE CHECK THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE TO ENSURE YOUR ISSUE/QUESTION/ CONCERN HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED THERE.

NOTE:  All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.

  • Q and A (April 3, 2020)   (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

No responses were received from the District to questions that have been submitted.  All questions submitted have been sent to the District for response.

SDUSD AND SDEA REACH AGREEMENT REGARDING DISTANCE LEARNING
See attached agreement.  AASD has submitted a demand to bargain and will be meeting with the district next week.

EMAIL TO PRINCIPALS RE: DISTANCE LEARNING
The email below went to Principals today (note that the links are only accessible to principals who have access to the Google doc.)

    April 3, 2020

Our leadership has never been more important than right now, as we embark on this new journey of Distance Learning together. Our students and families are counting on us. We look forward to connecting with you either later today (1:00 pm for Elementary/K-8 and 2:30 pm for Secondary and Atypical) or Monday morning (invites will be forthcoming) to provide you more information on our Distance Learning plan. Please note for year-round principals, we will set up a meeting when you return from break. As we prepare for our soft launch of Distance Learning to begin on Monday, April 6th, alignment and coherence are essential. In preparation for the meeting, please review this Distance Learning Plan and the updates below:

    DISTANCE LEARNING LAUNCH
We have two important requests as we prepare for our official launch of Distance Learning:
    1. Continue to reach out to your students and families to share pertinent information. We want to give educators the time and space they need to become proficient online instructional educators. This means, in some cases, you may be the only one connecting directly with your parents and students in the days leading up to the Distance Learning launch on April 27th.

    2. Help manage the technology needs of your staff and students. Please do not send requests for staff who already have working devices. Sending out devices to staff who do not truly need them means someone in need might be left without access.

Timeline and Reminders about Distance Learning
SOFT LAUNCH:  (Traditional Schools, April 6-24.   Year-Round Schools, April 24-May 8)

    • Educators will be starting from a different place in terms of proficiency, and this is a good opportunity for educators to prepare for the official Distance Learning launch by:
      • Participating in district provided training
      • Starting or continuing to reach out to students and families as they try on new technology, platforms and ways of teaching and learning
      • Identifying the limits of our online outreach. If students and/or staff are missing access to the internet and/or devices, we will be working during this time to close those gaps
    • Students will be continuing their learning using enrichment materials during this time.
      • Students should be prepared to begin learning online in the classes for which they are enrolled
      • Materials can be found in the district’s Instructional Resources website

  • OFFICIAL LAUNCH & GRADING RESUMES:
    Traditional Schools, April 6-24.   Year-Round Schools, April 24-May 8)

  • ATTENTION AASD RETIRED MEMBERS
If any AASD retired member needs assistance with essential items, shopping, phone check-in’s or anything else during this time of crisis, please contact one of the AASD staff member’s below who will ensure that you get help.  We know some of our valued retired members may be alone during this time and we want to assure you that we are here to support and help you.

  • SPECIAL GRATITUDE
If an AASD member has a department or individual that deserves special recognition during this time of crisis, please use the link above for reporting issues/questions/concerns to also show your gratitude for the department or individual.  AASD will publish that special thanks in our next Daily Update.

Many of our AASD Members in Good Standing, including Julie Garcia from Ed Tech, thank Toren Allen, Executive Director of Integrated Technology, who has worked tirelessly to support our district with access to technology during these challenging times. Starting from making sure central office staff have devices and a secure network from home, to organizing efforts for students and staff to have access to technology for teaching and learning, Toren is making sure everyone is covered! It is this behind the scenes work that often times goes unnoticed. Great job, Toren. We appreciate all that you do!

Need more balance between information and overload?
    We're here to help.
With most of the country under "stay at home" orders and many of you on the frontlines to stop the virus, we realize the stress that comes from such disruption and information overload. It can be hard to find the balance between staying informed and being overwhelmed. We're here to help by distilling some important information for you.

How the "CARES" Act May Impact You and Your Family
We've created a summary of the CARES Act that was signed into law last week to provide important relief to working families. This is not an exhaustive explanation, but rather a summary the provisions that will most directly impact working families.

How Union Plus and our Partners are Supporting You and Your Family
Union Plus is proud to provide Hardship Help to eligible union members. In addition, many of our program partners have really stepped up to the plate to offer important billing accommodations and flexibilities during this time. We’ve included a summary for you below.

Union Members are Leading the Fight on the Frontlines
We are inspired by the union members and leaders that are leading the fight against the virus on the frontlines. Nurses, grocery store workers, sanitation workers, postal workers, utility workers, machinists, auto workers, and so many more are out there every day making sure we can defeat the virus, save lives, and get America back to work again. Worker safety is paramount right now and the AFL-CIO is leading the fight to ensure worker protections are in place.

We wish you all safety and health during this uncertain time. We will get through this together.

    President, Union Plus

    Wisconsin Machinists Extend Contract
    to Accelerate Ventilator Production

Wisconsin International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) have taken bold action, and unanimously approved a one-year contract extension — rallying to the call for emergent ventilator production.

"This extension allows the company and union to work together to produce lifesaving ventilator equipment that will be used around the world to combat the virus," said IAM District 10 Business Representative, Joe Terlisner.

IAM International President Robert Martinez, Jr. notes, "It is because of hard-working and dedicated men and women like the membership of Local 1406 that I know we will get through this crisis. They are an inspiration to all of us in a time when the whole world needs to be joining together in solidarity to tackle this pandemic. They are literally saving lives and our entire union is incredibly proud of them."
