DAILY UPDATE #16 -- 4/6/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE

AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues and the COVID-19 virus.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.

  • Q and A (Monday, April 6, 2020)   (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

Q --  With the new MOU it states that SDEA members are entitled to 1 hour on the site each month. It states to work that out with Admin to coordinate. Now that I’m being required to go in and do this will there be hazard pay for being out? Am I expected to meet the needs of each staff member of when they can come or am I able to make that decision. How did what I do get negotiated into SDEA MOU?
A – (answer provided by AASD)  AASD is in the process of bargaining impacts and effects of our AASD members due to the school closures/distance learning.  We expect an agreement by the end of the week.  All areas of impacts on our members will be discussed at bargaining.  AASD’s understanding of the MOU with SDEA, and the one hour per month visit to the school site, is that the principal selects a date/time and gives a week’s notice to the staff and then coordinates with those staff members that need materials to come and get them.  The language states:    3.2. The District shall provide at least 1 hour, per month, to each unit member to be able to return to their worksite/workspace, during normal business hours, in order to collect any items the unit member deems necessary to conduct the distance learning program. 3.2.1. The date and time when a unit member can return to their worksite/workspace to collect needed items shall be communicated to unit members by their administrator, at least one week in advance.

Q -- Is AASD working on an agreement with the district similar to that of CSEA or POA? Where as we are not eligible for OT but for time if we are asked to physically report?
A – (answer provided by AASD) AASD is in the process of bargaining impacts and effects of our AASD members due to the school closures/distance learning.  We expect an agreement by the end of the week.  All areas of impacts on our members will be discussed at bargaining.

Q – Regarding Distance Learning Plan --  Is there a maximum amount of work time for administrators like teachers have (max out at 240 mins)?
A --  (answer provided by AASD)  AASD is in the process of bargaining impacts and effects of our AASD members due to the school closures/distance learning.  We expect an agreement by the end of the week.  All areas of impacts on our members will be discussed at bargaining.  As you know, in the SDEA contract, teachers normally have a six hour and thirty-five minute workday.  Principals are exempt employees and do not have a maximum number of work hours under normal circumstances.

Q – As a Principal, I received this question from a teacher today, and not sure how to even begin to answer. "SDEA told us that the administrators would be the ones in charge of getting Internet service if we need it. We have service at my house, but it is not enough to have me working online, in addition to my husband and kids having to use it as well. We will need to upgrade. Do you know how the district is going to manage that? Do we have any options?"
A – (answer provided by Staci Monreal, Chief of Staff to AASD)  There are two ways to handle this.  The Principal will share this information with the Action Team Lead and the team will leverage the system to respond.  Or when the new process is up and running a teacher can request support his or herself.  In the MOU, there are two ways to get support.  These are both processes that the District is in the process of setting up and are not quite ready yet for implementation.

Q -- As much as I didn’t want to be a part of Friday’s “voluntary” principal Zoom meeting because it is my spring break, I couldn’t have imagined not getting this information Friday and waiting until Monday. Make no mistake today’s meeting was mandatory if we are doing right by our school and community. What is our compensation for working during break?
A – (answer provided by AASD)  AASD is in the process of bargaining impacts and effects of our AASD members due to the school closures/distance learning.  We expect an agreement by the end of the week.  All areas of impacts on our members will be discussed at bargaining including the fact that Principal’s were required to work during Spring Break.

  • DISTRICT COMMUNICATIONS
Principals received the attached communications on 4/5/20 regarding Talking Points for Computer Distribution and Zoom policies, as well as the attached letter from Superintendent Marten.  (Many communications are going out to Principals.  It is not possible for AASD to share all of the communications due to volume; however, we are sharing those we think might be helpful and interesting to all AASD members.)

  • ATTENTION AASD RETIRED MEMBERS
If any AASD retired member needs assistance with essential items, shopping, phone check-in’s or anything else during this time of crisis, please contact one of the AASD staff member’s below who will ensure that you get help.  We know some of our valued retired members may be alone during this time and we want to assure you that we are here to support and help you.

  • SPECIAL GRATITUDE
If an AASD member has a department or individual that deserves special recognition during this time of crisis, please use the link above for reporting issues/questions/concerns to also show your gratitude for the department or individual.  AASD will publish that special thanks in our next Daily Update.

AASD Member in Good Standing, Laura Alluin, Principal at Hardy Elementary, shares her gratitude for Wendy Ranck-Buhr, Instructional Support Officer and Julie Garcia, Program Manager, Ed Tech, for their patience and support in helping me muddle through how to use Google Forms. As an only medium-confident user of technology and online platforms, much of the work being asked of principals is challenging and my lack of that type of technical experience created a barrier for supporting my school.

An AASD Member in Good Standing would like to express their gratitude to the District’s Executive Leadership Team for being mindful of giving principals and teachers room to grow, learn, and process without judgment.

An AASD Member in Good Standing (“BW”) would like to extend unending gratitude to AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, for her dedication to serving all AASD members! Her humanity, understanding, courage, and care are appreciated!
