DAILY UPDATE #23 -- 4/15/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE

AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues and the COVID-19 virus.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.  PLEASE CHECK THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE TO ENSURE YOUR ISSUE/QUESTION/ CONCERN HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED THERE.

NOTE:  All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.

  • Q and A (Wednesday, April 15, 2020)   (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

Q --  Is there any word yet on what Para-Educators will be doing?
A --  (Answer provided by the District)   Principals and Para-Educators received guidance on the role of the Para-Educators on 4/14/20 in the Principal Update During School Closures.

Q -- Does number 2 of the AASD Certificated MOU mean that certificated AASD members such as Principal and Vice Principal are to be paid time & a half for the days that we are required to open our sites (March 27th, April 21st, May 10th, June 10th)? If so, what timecard do we use to report this?
A – (Answer provided by AASD)  Yes, ANY AASD member (certificated or classified) that is required/assigned to PHYSICALLY report to a site will be paid time and a half for the hours reporting to the physical location.  This includes the dates teachers are coming to pick up materials.  Information about how to record this time will be coming from Payroll and will be sent to timekeepers.  At this time, do not complete any timecards unless told by Payroll to do so.

Q -- Will there be a letter going out to parents soon regarding the direction for special education? My teachers and myself are receiving an overwhelming number of inquiries from parents wanting answers. My teachers are working very hard to keep up and they are feeling very overwhelmed as am I. I understand that this is very complex and requires time to figure out, so even having some kind of guidance/communication to go out would be helpful. Maybe a document with frequently asked questions for parents would help as things get ironed out. Thanks for your help.
A – (Answer provided by the District)  The guidance that were released should answer the parent and staff questions. Please see the guidance, training video and parent guidance (PWN) on the webpage linked here.

Q -- I am a program manager and am now also an Action Team Lead. I’ve received mixed messages about how to complete both roles. I still have many projects to complete from my previous department and have many new responsibilities in supporting principals. I’m confused about who is my supervisor? I’ve been told it’s now the area superintendent and been told it’s still my department director. Who is it? Secondly, as program manager, I used to field questions from all area principals. Are principals now only to contact and ask questions to their ATL and not directly to me?
A – (Answer provided by the District)  Departments are holding meetings with Central Office Managers to clarify their new role. Please reach out to your supervisor if you need clarification about your new role.
(Additional answer provided by AASD)  Please contact the AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, if there are still continuing concerns.

Q -- These "voluntary" office hours for principals -- I've learned that if we don’t "voluntarily" show up then we miss out on important NEW information that can have an impact on our schools. Doesn’t  sound so voluntary to me. Anything new should be shared with everyone.
A – (Answer provided by the District)  Thank you for your feedback. This information was shared with executive leadership.

Q -- Student enrollment is going to be an ongoing issue. This situation presents an opportunity to transition to online enrollment (like most surrounding districts).
A – (Answer provided by the District)  Thank you for your feedback. This information was shared with executive leadership.

Q -- My Action Team Leader is NOT helpful. My ATL asks me the same questions every day. Answers that only central office knows such as which staff members have signed up for training via Professional Learning, aka ERO. The ATL always says they can't talk because they have calls to make and boxes to check. This is busy work for them and us. This isn't kind or supportive.
Q -- The Action Team Leader structure was initially presented to principals as a support for principals, but it is now clear that this is an accountability measure. Why can't the ATLs just offer genuine support to principals on an "as needed" basis? Principals were trusted to lead schools in the traditional setting, why does the same level of trust not exist in the online setting?
A – (Answer provided by the District)  Thank you for your feedback. This information was shared with executive leadership.

Q –  A lot of questions have been asked with the answer provided by the District of "shared with executive leadership." Are those being answered or followed up on, and if so, can that be denoted on the answer?
A – (Answer provided by the District)  All questions, issues, and feedback received is very important to District leadership and is reviewed on a daily basis. Answers provided by the District that include “shared with executive leadership” means that the concern/comment/issue has been shared with the Area Superintendents and other Executive Leaders and is being used to clarify, consider, and modify processes and policies, and responses may also be addressed in the information provided via the google doc "Principal Updates During School Closures."
