- ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS (ACSA) - FORMING GROUP TO GUIDE REOPENING OF SCHOOLS
During a news conference yesterday, Gov. Gavin Newsom suggested that California public schools could open in July as he and his administration work to mitigate any loss of learning by getting students back into the classroom. ACSA knows this statement may have caused confusion or alarm. We want to clarify that the governor is prepared to begin conversations with education stakeholders and we will be playing an important role in moving the conversation forward. ACSA is convening a working group of California public school leaders charged with creating a plan to reopen schools for the 2020-2021 academic year. Discussions have begun between the administration, ACSA and other education advocacy groups on when and how it is appropriate for schools to reopen. On April 14, Newsom indicated that when students return to their physical schools, they will come back to schools organized in new and different ways. ACSA members have a strong interest in getting back to normalcy in our school communities, but only when it is safe. Instruction, resource allocation, safety, labor management and regulatory relief must be considered and we believe we’ve convened a powerful group that is made up of experts who understand the entirety of the systems needed to reopen our schools. ACSA represents your needs as school leaders and we encourage you to send any questions or concerns to Edgar Zazueta, ACSA Senior Director of Policy and Governmental Relations, at ezazueta@acsa.org.
