DAILY UPDATE #35 -- 5/01/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE

AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues and the COVID-19 virus.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

  • Q and A (Friday, May 1, 2020)   (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

Q  --  I am a Food Service Supervisor running a grab and go food distribution site.  Since inception I have had two District employee “volunteers” working with me.  One from Maintenance and one from Transportation. They have been told they will not receive any hazard pay for the time worked physically on the site because they are not essential workers, yet they are here daily.  They are members of CSEA. Who can I direct them to for Information?
A – (Answer provided by AASD).  Please have the employees contact their labor relations representative, Mr. Jose Sanchez or their union president Gabriel Huezo for assistance.

  • FROM AMERICAN FEDERATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS (AFSA)

COVID-19: Re-Entry & Beyond Date, May 5, 2020 at 1pm (San Diego time)  (Note that all AFSA registrations are Eastern time – be sure to note the time change for the west coast)

As educators, we are in unprecedented times. Never did we think that a global pandemic would cripple the world. Districts across the nation were told to close their schools, send students and staff home, and begin to teach and learn in an online/remote environment.

Educators are adept at solving difficult challenges daily, but the problems now faced are paramount. Although complex, these challenges will lead to adaptation and innovation. Even during the immediate and unplanned disruption of this year, successful leaders and teachers must focus on the future – on the ways that education for ALL children will need to change to not only be prepared for future disruptions, but to unleash more self-sustained learning for educators and students no matter the context. This means working backwards from a vision of future learning to the systems that will support it.

Leaders should be working now to put in place the operational, instructional leadership, and teaching practices that will proactively build those resilient systems in their schools and districts for sustainable impact.

The American Federation of School Administrators and the International Center for Leadership in Education invites you to attend this pertinent and timely seminar.  Dr. Bill Daggett, Founder ICLE, will share his findings from roundtable discussions with district and school leaders across the nation and focus on 12 key topics districts and schools must consider as they plan for Re-Entry and Beyond.
