DAILY UPDATE #54 -- 6/03/2020
- AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period. The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members. The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed. AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.
AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues and the COVID-19 virus. Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District. AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district. You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.
The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

- Q and A (Wednesday, June 3, 2020) (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District. AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)
Q -- How long will the hazard pay keep going on as affects budgeting for next year at sites?
A – (Answer provided by AASD) The MOU that provides for hazard pay (time and a half) for AASD members who are required to physically report to work ends on June 30, 2020. There is language that states that the MOU may be extended if both parties are in agreement. Discussions will be occurring this month regarding the MOU.
- AASD FEEDBACK/INPUT ON SCHOOL RE-OPENING PLAN
On Tuesday, June 2, AASD representatives spent the day on Zoom with District Executive Leadership who presented the draft of the District’s instructional options for student learning for 2020-21. AASD representatives had an opportunity to listen to the District presentation and ask clarifying questions. AASD representatives then spent time in caucus forming our feedback and input which was then presented to the District team. AASD wishes to thank Superintendent Marten, Chief of Staff Monreal and the District team for soliciting and listening to AASD’s feedback, on behalf of our members. The plan presented included options for instruction for 2020-21 and did not include operational and logistical matters such as transportation, custodial, food services, maintenance, police services, etc. AASD’s understanding is that the plan for instructional options will be presented to other unions over the next week and will then be presented to the Board of Education at the June 16 workshop. Following the June 16 workshop, presuming the plan is approved, the District will be convening various groups to provide input into many logistical issues. Volunteers will be solicited for these groups.
AASD sincerely thanks the following AASD members/staff for their input and feedback at Tuesday’s meeting with the District. Thank you to:
AASD Representatives/Staff: John Aguilar, Phil Baertschi, Gina Camacho-McGrath, Krista Conn, Donis Coronel, Jim Costello, Linda Crout-Hamel, Dean Darley, Bryan Ehm, Daniel Gilbreth, Paula Hamar, Irene Hightower, Cristine Holmer, Kristin Makena, Jesus Montana, Jolie Pickett, Jon Robell, Juan Romo, Jeff Thomas, Scott Thomason and Peggy Zickert.
- DISTRICT COMMUNICATION
The following communication was sent on June 2 to Principals.
We stand in solidarity with our entire community and want to continue to let everyone know we are here for you. We hear you, we see you, and we stand with you. The death of George Floyd and the recent events across our city, state and nation magnify the need for strong equity work in schools and districts. Authentic conversations about privilege, power and race are needed and long overdue. As educators, we have the unique opportunity to listen to our students, understand their perspectives, honor their lived experiences, and support them in figuring how they share their voice to engage in this national conversation.
Please listen to Superintendent Marten’s statement on teaching students about injustice. Below, we have gathered resources that you may share with your staff and families to help facilitate conversations. In the coming weeks, the Youth Advocacy Department will be hosting themed discussion groups to assist administrators in walking alongside staff and students as we all work towards educational and social justice. If you need additional or immediate support, please reach out to Youthadvocacy@sandi.net.
CLUSTER INPUT ON FALL REOPENING OF SCHOOLS
- In preparation for the June 16th Board Workshop, Area Superintendents will facilitate Cluster conversations around the reopening of schools. We encourage school communities to attend.
