AASD Weekly Update 06-04-2020
NEW ITEMS
- FROM SAN DIEGO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION -- EQUITY RESOURCES TO FACILIATE CONVERSATIONS, June 2, 2020
With the death of George Floyd and other recent, racially-charged incidents and resulting protests in some of our communities and across the country, some of our students and families are deeply hurting. This pain comes on top of stress from the pandemic, which has exacerbated inequities and disproportionately hurt historically underserved children. In normal times, our classrooms would be a powerful place to help children navigate the scenes that have filled our televisions and, in some cases, streets. Though campuses are closed, we still have a moral obligation to create safe spaces to discuss race, inequities, and recent events with children -- and now, to help parents do the same. To support that, the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) has curated resources to assist in facilitating conversations with students and families.
"I have been very open about my commitment to educational equity, and I want to be explicit that I am equally committed to fighting institutional racism," said San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold. "I want to be clear that, as an organization, SDCOE will and must use our resources to actively fight against racism in any form. We need to double down on our efforts to combat racism and implicit bias in schools, hiring practices, and policies. Each of must call out things that aren't right."
The resources for discussing racism and protests are in addition to materials SDCOE created to support equity in distance learning:
- Equity Resource Summary
- Equity Resources for Instructional Continuity
- Equity Considerations for Distance Learning
"It's imperative that we go above and beyond to make sure all of our students, especially those who have been historically underserved, have the support and outlets they need to work through their emotions around these topics," Gothold said. "Schools are the cornerstones of communities and can play a powerful role in changing people's perceptions and processes. That starts with us."
- ACSA TOWN HALL SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 8
The blatant disregard for life seen in the murder of Mr. George Floyd and the national response to the injustice suffered by him and many others before him, have galvanized Americans throughout the country to protest and show solidarity with all those who long for an inclusive society that does not tolerate racist actions.
As an organization, ACSA holds itself to a high standard of equity and inclusion. California public education leaders stand side-by-side with students and school communities of all races, colors and genders. We believe in fairness, integrity and positive interventions. Our members condemn acts of hate and violence and believe our society must have a vision of respect and inclusivity.
Education leaders are difference-makers in our communities large and small and we understand our role is to create schools where discourse on inherent human rights and social responsibility towards all people is the core standard. Our schools must be models for society of inclusion, respect and appreciation toward all students, families and staff.
ACSA believes that the most effective way to honor victims is to strengthen the conversation and advocacy about social issues and system inequities in our public schools, our state and across the nation.
As an organization focused on student advocacy, we are taking the proactive step in uniting some of the most powerful equity-based voices for a thoughtful night of discussion and empowerment. ACSA will host the Systemic Racial Intolerance and Injustice town hall live on Monday at 5:30 PM on the ACSA Facebook and YouTube platforms. Our goal is to commit and establish a platform for continued leadership to ensure our schools and society teach inclusion, anti-racism and social responsibility. Our hope is that this free, interactive community forum is a step toward connecting participants with the spirit of community and family.

- FROM RANCH EVENTS – DINNERS THAT FEED UP TO 6 PEOPLE FOR $25
Tired of cooking? As many of you know, all of the AASD events at Marina Village and Scottish Rite Center are catered by Ranch Events. They make and serve delicious meals! Ranch Events has opened their kitchen at the Scottish Rite Event Center (in Mission Valley) for “take out” meals that feed up to 4-5 adults and 1-2 children for $25! Such a deal. And delicious, home style cooked meals. The website is below; meals can be ordered in advance or the order can be placed on the same day, as long as it is placed by 12 noon that day. Pick up times are 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM each day at the Scottish Rite Event Center in Mission Valley. In addition, Ranch Events has just added a family meal pick up during the lunch hour. This is a great way to take a night off from cooking and still be able to feed your family at a reasonable price. They also have individual vegetarian meals, soups and desserts as “add-ons.” AASD has partnered with Ranch Events for many years and we are pleased they are able to bring some staff back to work. Feel free to share this information with anyone you wish to. Many of our AASD members have tried the meals and the feedback has been positive.

- IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE! FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW! This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018. It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members. Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME. If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so. However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.
Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again. If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance. Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
