DAILY UPDATE #58 -- 6/09/2020
- AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period. The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members. The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed. AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.
AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues and the COVID-19 virus. Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District. AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district. You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.
The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVSsqBQSHboCdgqbnpaucUY--DHKjosG8MAmRuCxawzB4blg/viewform?usp=sf_link
Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors). The link will be active until this crisis is over. PLEASE CHECK THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE TO ENSURE YOUR ISSUE/QUESTION/ CONCERN HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED THERE.
NOTE: All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.
- Q and A (Tuesday, June 9, 2020) (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District. AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)
Q -- Will the district still be enforcing the vacation cap of 328 hours by August 31st?
A -- (Answer provided by the District) The District is encouraging (emphasis added by AASD) employees to take vacation; however, the District recognizes the complexity of the issue. The more employees who take accrued vacation, the better the District’s financial picture improves as a District. (Additional information added by AASD) AASD understands the District’s position; however, these are times when there is a lot of work to be done by AASD members and there may not be the luxury of time to take accrued vacation, and there is also very little to do during personal vacation time due to COVID-19. AASD's contract allows the district to pay employees for any vacation accrued past the cap of 328 hours (as of the end of August). AASD does not have any information of how site budgets would (or would not) be affected by those payouts. Any AASD represented member who is being “forced” into taking accrued vacation time and is uncomfortable with that should contact the AASD Executive Director at donis@aasdcs.org for guidance.
Q -- What are the plans next year for the Integrated Teams at the district level? We have heard that the Behavior Support Resources team of teachers have been excessed and are already taking positions at sites as teachers. The leader of our department told us about the new organization with Area Superintendents leading an integrated team of experts to address cluster and site needs, but without the behavior experts who will be doing that work? 2. The leader of our department seems to be spread so thin that she cannot even respond or take care of her own leaders. Meetings are regularly cancelled and emails very rarely responded to in the “24-hour” recommended time. This was already going on before distance learning and has been heightened since March 13. I understand it is a new way of navigating, but what about the leadership we need to do our work and support our people?
A – (Answer provided by the District) Thank you for your feedback. The Behavior Support Teachers have not been excessed. Leaders throughout our system have been tasked to address work in ways we have never imagined and we continue to ask for grace and understanding. If you do not feel like you are able to speak with your supervisor, please use the chain of command to request a meeting to speak with both your supervisor and their supervisor.
Q -- Are we going to be given PPE supplies as we begin our materials distribution and staff coming in for longer times? Are custodians to be cleaning the rooms while the teachers are in there using them? Are bathrooms to be sanitized on a certain schedule since we will be on campus on repetitive days and for longer times?
A – (Answer provided by the District) Yes. The District has already begun sourcing and purchasing PPE supplies. The June 16 Board workshop will discuss options for the Fall. Once the Board provides direction, this implementation will be able to be planned with input from staff.
Q -- Once again different messages are out there regarding graduations. Are we allowed to do drive thru ceremonies/recognition or not? I’ve heard an emphatic no, but somehow schools are still being allowed to do so. It directly pits schools against each other, communities against each other and becomes a bigger equity and fairness issue than before. How is this being allowed? Not fair to schools. Please get firm on your messages and directives.
A – (Answer provided by the District) Thank you for your feedback. It was shared with the executive team.
Q -- What will happen next year if my child attends a different district and they need to stay home for learning and we get expected to do a blended learning model? How will employees be protected from retribution, job loss, etc., if other districts keep their children online learning and we go back?
A – (Answer provided by the District) The June 16 Board workshop will discuss options for the Fall. Once the Board provides direction, this implementation will be able to be planned with input from staff. (Additional information from AASD) -- Once the Board of Education provides direction, AASD will bargain impacts and effects of the decision.
