DAILY UPDATE #80 -- 7/14/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19 virus and school reopening.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.

  • Q and A (Tuesday, July 14, 2020)   (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

Q -- Why does the District still feel it is acceptable for employees to find out school will begin in the fall with online instruction from the Union Tribune versus communication from them?  It seems throughout this pandemic, we receive more information from the media than the District. Employees, all employees, should be shown respect in terms of receiving communication directly.
A – (Answer provided by AASD)  Regarding yesterday’s announcement of full online instruction – in a direct conversation with Superintendent Marten, she explained that the final decision occurred after a full weekend of high level discussions.  Since it was a joint decision with LAUSD who wanted to announce in the morning, the timing of communications was a challenge.  At 10:35 a.m., after briefing Cabinet, a meeting invitation to an “emergency meeting” went to all principals for a 10:50 a.m. meeting.  Most principals attended the 10:50 a.m. Zoom meeting and were told that a press release was going at 11:00 a.m. to the LA Times, SD Union Tribune and NY Times, immediately followed by e-mails to district staff.  AASD understands the urgency of yesterday’s announcement.  We also understand how our members feel when they do not receive information directly, but from the media.  We are working together with the District to improve communication as evidenced in our recent impacts and effects bargaining where communication is addressed.

Q --  How will the recent decision for online learning affect classified support staff? Specifically layoffs or furloughs?
A --  (Answer provided by AASD)  At this time, AASD has no indication of layoff or furlough days for classified supervisors or managers.  AASD does not have any information about how this may or may not impact CSEA unit members.  Per California legislation, during the 2020-21 school year, districts are banned from laying off transportation employees, food services employees and custodial employees.

Q -- With the city shutting back down are we considering starting hazard pay again for AASD members who are working every day?
A – (Answer provided by AASD)  The District has made it clear that they can not and will not continue to pay hazard pay.  AASD was able to negotiate it for mid-March through the end of June only and a number of our members benefited from the extra pay while working on a physical site.  AASD was the only administrators/managers/supervisors union in the State of California that received hazard pay.  No other large urban district paid hazard pay to their management employees.  While we would love for hazard pay to continue, the district will not agree to it.
