DAILY UPDATE #81 -- 7/15/2020
- AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period. The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members. The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed. AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.
AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19 virus and school reopening. Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District. AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district. You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.
The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

- Q and A (Wednesday, July 15, 2020) (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District. AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)
Q: From a Food Services Supervisor: This question is regarding food services supervisors that are working either in the kitchens and/or in distribution of meals and are diagnosed with COVID-19. Does the CARES Act cover our wages? Do we use our own balances? This is for school year 2020/21.
A: (Answer provided by AASD) This answer pertains to any AASD-represented employee who tests positive for COVID-19 and/or is diagnosed with COVID-19. Under the CARES Act, there is a provision for up to eighty (80) hours of COVID-19 leave (two work weeks) and then the employee’s various accrued leave balances would be used. There is also State legislation that states if the virus was contracted in the workplace that it may qualify for Workers Compensation. Please understand that the legislation, policies and government assistance is fluid and as changes or enhancements are made, AASD has the right to return to the bargaining table if there is a change that needs to be negotiated.
Q: From a Principal: It is stated in the Daily Update on Monday that the decision to open schools with online learning now gives administrators time to prepare for physical reopening of schools. It does? I have no information on how to prepare a master schedule as we do not know what teaching schedules need to look like. We do not know the expectations. We have not been given guidance as to when to start meeting with our school communities to figure out a safe schedule for student return, i.e., should we have block schedule, staggered starts, transportation times, etc. So while a decision was made to not return to in-person schooling, the decision has done nothing that would allow a school to prepare for a school opening other than take more options off the table. All we have had are think tanks, but no meeting with staff, students and parents. We have held back doing this because we have ongoing negotiations.
A -- (Answer provided by AASD) You are correct that Principals have not yet been given guidelines that will allow them to even prepare for a school opening with online learning only. Much of that will be dictated by the bargaining the district is doing with SDEA. AASD’s understanding is that bargaining is scheduled this week and the following week. We are hopeful for the parties (district and SDEA) to reach an agreement so our administrators can be provided with the parameters for instruction for the 2020-21 school year. What may not have been clear in AASD’s communication was that we were referring to the daunting task of physically opening schools on August 31 and that now principals will have more time to plan for that type of return to school. We do understand that rolling out full online learning will take a great deal of planning to implement and that principals do not have the information to do this yet.
