DAILY UPDATE #82 -- 7/16/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the school closure period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office will remain closed during the period of time the schools/district are closed.  AASD staff will be working remotely and can be reached at the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19 virus and school reopening.  Any issues, questions or concerns submitted via the Google form will be shared daily with the District.  AASD will then share the answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as those answers are received from the district.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc. via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.  PLEASE CHECK THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE TO ENSURE YOUR ISSUE/QUESTION/ CONCERN HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN ADDRESSED THERE.

NOTE:  All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.

  • Q and A (Thursday, July 16, 2020) (Questions were submitted by AASD members; the answers are from the District.  AASD publishes the answers as they are received from the District.)

328-Hour Vacation Cap:  AASD received an inquiry from a classified manager or supervisor who felt they were “forced” by their supervisor to take vacation time in June or early July to bring their balance down below 328 hours.  The inquiry asked if the vacation balances would be restored based on the MOU that was reached on July 13 that states AASD members will not be forced to take vacation and the cap will be removed temporarily.  Unfortunately, AASD cannot require the district to restore balances.  In the AASD Daily Update on April 22, May 21, June 9 and June 10, the vacation cap was discussed and AASD requested that members who were being forced to take vacation should contact the AASD Executive Director for assistance.

  • CLARIFICATION OF THE CERTIFICATED MOU LANGUAGE REGARDING WORK DURING OFF-CALENDAR DAYS (FOR AASD-REPRESENTED CERTIFICATED MEMBERS)
Important clarification – please read.  The language below was negotiated in the AASD/SDUSD MOU regarding Return to Instruction.  AASD has received questions regarding the language and would like to share what was discussed at the bargaining table.

In the likely event that any AASD-represented employee is required to work on their “off calendar” days between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 in order to prepare for an August school reopening or a reopening during the school year, employees shall be paid pro rata pay for any time worked.  No employee will be required to accept compensatory time in lieu of payment for time worked or to create an individual flexible calendar to avoid the payment for time worked.

In order to perform the duties required in Summer 2020 to successfully resume instruction on August 31, AASD-represented administrators must be given the flexibility at their discretion to have staff who are normally off calendar in the summer report to work to assist with planning, preparation, master schedule, clerical, etc.  The District will provide a tiered amount of funding to each school site for the essential personnel needed to complete summer work based on grade levels served.

The requirement for AASD certificated members to work during “off calendar” days to prepare for an August reopening of schools or reopening during the school year would be in order to do the work necessary to reopen schools, prepare for online learning or preparation related to the return of students and staff to the physical site or to online learning.  Additionally, the tiered funding referenced above was meant to assist principals with planning, preparation, master schedule, etc., in order to successfully resume instruction.  The additional pay for the principal or vice principal or other essential personnel to work during off calendar days was NOT intended to be for routine tasks.  The district will be providing information about the amount of funding and the process for using this funding.

  • SPECIAL GRATITUDE
If an AASD member has a department or individual that deserves special recognition during this time of crisis, please use the link above for reporting issues/questions/ concerns/gratitude to show your gratitude for the department or individual.  AASD will publish that special thanks in our next Daily Update.

The AASD Board of Directors would like to acknowledge and thank the district’s Payroll and Benefits Director, Sue Weir, as she retires from SDUSD with 30 years of service.  Over the years, Sue has been a wonderful colleague and friend of AASD and we appreciate her dedication and service to the students and the employees of SDUSD.  We wish Sue the best as she enters into retirement!  We will miss you, Sue!
