DAILY UPDATE #103 -- 8/17/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE.
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the return to instruction/school reopening period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office continues to remain closed.  AASD staff are working remotely and can be reached via the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19, return to instruction and school reopening.  AASD will provide answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as answers become available.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc., via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.

NOTE:  All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.

  • NEW GUIDANCE FROM STATE
Many questions surround the new development reported in the following article.  AASD does not have any further information at this time.  Any return to site under these circumstances would have to be negotiated with the various unions.

California schools allowed to open for small groups with acute needs under new guidance (Ed Source, August 14)

  • Q and A (Monday, August 17, 2020)
Q:  Without leadership (Principals and/or Vice Principals) being required to be on campus during online learning, who will supervise teachers and staff trying to follow a new stringent protocol with mask, etc. on campus? Who will be the mediator without direct leadership physically on campus to enforce the new policies?
A:  (Answer provided by AASD)  Custodial staffs have been on campus since July 6 without the direct supervision of the principal.  AASD presumes that if custodial personnel have concerns about other co-workers not following the health and safety guidelines, they will feel comfortable reporting the issues to the Principal by phone, e-mail, etc., or will report to the Custodial Operations Department.  As professionals and responsible citizens, teachers who elect to teach online from the physical school site should not need daily supervision to ensure they are following all health and safety protocols.  Again, if teachers have concerns about others not following the protocols, then they should make a report to the site administrator or at the district level.  AASD would hope that teachers who elect to teach from the site know and understand the serious health ramifications of not following the guidelines.  AASD understands that site administrators have concerns about not being on campus to directly supervise;  however, AASD takes the position that we highly encourage our members to do all work remotely except when absolutely necessary to be on the campus.  Those AASD represented administrators who are choosing to work from the physical campus must follow all health and safety guidelines and in-person interaction with any staff member also working onsite should be kept to a minimum and with physical distancing, face masks, etc.  AASD takes this position for the well-being, health and safety of all of our members.

Q:  As a principal, I received directives regarding device (computer) distribution at my site for incoming students who don’t have a device.  Does the District expect me, as the principal, to be the one to distribute the devices?
A:  (Answer received from Toren Allen, Executive Director, IT)   Each principal at each site received the devices for their site, a picture of where the devices are located, as well as a personalized letter with instructions on how to check out the devices.  There were instructions within the document on how to check out devices – similar to Library Books or other things students check out.
From AASD – Some principals have shared that they are paying Paraeducators, including Noon Duty, to come in if they wish to do the device distribution, and some principals are using office staff, etc.  The Principal is not expected to do this task, but is expected to coordinate with other staff to accomplish the distribution.

Q:  Health & Safety Guidelines: If principals are ultimately responsible for ensuring all staff on campus follow health and safety guidelines, will the District provide Social Distancing decals, signs, posters (as all other stores, businesses have these visually displayed) to post throughout campus as reminders for all who are on campus? Or are principals required to spend their own site funds or money and/or create their own posters? It would be helpful to have district-wide decals for consistency across sites as some district employees visit multiple sites.
A:  (Answer provided by PPO)  See the PPO Info Flyer referenced below.
