DAILY UPDATE #104 -- 8/18/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE.
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the return to instruction/school reopening period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office continues to remain closed.  AASD staff are working remotely and can be reached via the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19, return to instruction and school reopening.  AASD will provide answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as answers become available.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc., via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVSsqBQSHboCdgqbnpaucUY--DHKjosG8MAmRuCxawzB4blg/viewform?usp=sf_link

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.

NOTE:  All previous AASD Daily Updates and Weekly Updates are located on the AASD Website www.aasdcs.org if you need to refer back to them for information.

  • Q and A (Tuesday, August 18, 2020)
Q:  The special education department is lacking in their communication with site administrators. Many questions are being left unanswered or vague, training requires Ed Specialists to have rosters before they can attend trainings (being offered before we have a chance to get that done), not being very clear with how Ed Specialists can meet their hours of live instruction, etc. This is the area where we are struggling with the most in a "normal" year, let alone now in the pandemic arena. They must get on board with a plan rather than saying the common "we will get back to you."
A:  (Provided by AASD)  Thank you for sharing your concern.  AASD has shared it with the executive leadership team.

    AASD received the following question/feedback:
Submitted:  “As much as there has been increased communication from the district we are now finding multiple instances of mixed messages from one presentation to the next, some of which contradicts each other. Obviously this makes it difficult to accurately communicate with our staff.”

We want to provide answers or share the concern with district executive leadership; however, when submitting we are asking for more specifics so we can approach the district.  There are not enough specifics for AASD to act upon.  Examples would be helpful.  Feel free to resubmit with more details.  Thanks!

  • DISTRICT COMMUNICATIONS
The following communication went to principals on August 17 from the district:

  • SDEA RATIFICATION
    • On Friday afternoon, we received notification from SDEA that their members have ratified the MOU for online instruction. If you have questions regarding the MOU, please contact your Area Superintendent
      or Labor Relations.

  • WEBSITE CLOSE OUT UPDATE
    • School websites are a powerful communication tool when sharing information with our school communities.
    • As you are aware, the district has moved to a new vendor for our school websites and is preparing to go “live” early this week.
    • We recognize the challenges in updating our current website and that not all of your school’s information has transferred over correctly into the new platform. Please connect with dhowe@sandi.net if you need access to view your site’s website.
    • Please read this information from our Communications Office on key elements to strengthen your websites and for resources and support.

  • EDUCATOR LEARNING
    • We have an amazing opportunity to provide professional learning for all educators in our district as we launch the 2020-2021 school year.
    • Our learning will be focused on the foundation of continuity, alignment, equity, and access across the entire district.
    • Please see the following resources for information about the professional learning series and sessions. Registration information is coming soon!
  • SITE ACCESS COORDINATION
    • The District Operations Team would like to collaborate with Site Leaders to distribute information to families during site’s scheduled dates for In-Person Enrollment (for families without access to technology) and Textbook/Instructional Materials Distribution.
    • We are trying to consolidate our distribution efforts with what sites have already planned. Please note, site administrators are not required to be on campus.
    •  Please complete the Google Form for:
      • Any dates and times you are already planning for families to enroll or pick up materials.
      • Any dates and times someone would be on campus to receive deliveries from Central Office.  Deliveries will be limited to materials for families (i.e. Facts for Parents).
    • Reminder: The health and safety of all of our school sites are our priority and must be followed. We’ve asked all Departments to minimize the amount of physical materials they plan to deliver to sites this year.
    • To the greatest extent possible, all back to school paperwork should be provided electronically.

  • SUMMER INSTITUTE VIDEO RECORDINGS
    • The recordings from the Summer Institute sessions (June 24-26) are now uploaded and posted on this website.  You can view the video links organized by date and session.

  • SPECIAL GRATITUDE
If an AASD member has a department or individual that deserves special recognition during this time of crisis, please use the link above for reporting issues/questions/concerns/gratitude to show your gratitude for the department or individual.  AASD will publish that special thanks in our next Daily Update.

From Gina Camacho-McGrath, newly appointed Principal, Miller Elementary:  “A big shout out to the Serra Cluster Principals!! Their communication, cohesion and collaboration has supported me as I start my work in this community. I appreciate all their time and dedication to making sure the cluster is working as a team and that I am a part of the planning!”

AASD thanks Jon Robell, Standley Middle Vice Principal, for all of the work he has done to support other vice principals, including being the VP representative on the AASD Board of Directors, being on the AASD Certificated Bargaining Team, serving on the AASD Member Relations Committee and being a true leader in the success of the Vice Principal Network.  Jon has accepted a Vice Principal position in Mountain View School District in Santa Clara County and we will truly miss him, but wish him the best in this new venture.
