DAILY UPDATE #107 -- 8/21/2020
- AASD OFFICE CLOSURE.
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the return to instruction/school reopening period. The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members. The AASD Office continues to remain closed. AASD staff are working remotely and can be reached via the contact information at the end of this Update.
AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19, return to instruction and school reopening. AASD will provide answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as answers become available. You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc., via the same link.
The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

- Q and A (Friday, August 21, 2020)
Q: Can we get clarity on the COVID funds usage. We were given the staff budget strands, but not what the approved tasks are.
A: (Answer provided by AASD) AASD’s understanding is that the funds may be used for staff to prepare for return to instruction/school opening. If there are specific questions regarding how the funding may be used, check with your Area Superintendent.
Q: Is the district still bargaining with SDEA on health and safety?
A: (Answer provided by AASD) Yes, there are two bargaining dates scheduled for next week.
Q: There are issues with the implementation of the COVID-19 pay for employees who were out after July 1 due to being ill with COVID-19, quarantine, caring for others who are high risk, etc. It appears that the payroll coding is not correct and employees are having their personal balances affected.
A: (Answer provided by AASD) AASD negotiated in the July MOU that the old CARES Act (and now HR62) would be followed which allows either full pay for 80 hours or 2/3 pay for a defined number of hours, depending on the situation and then personal leave balances are used. It has proven to be challenging to implement within the computer system and involves tax tables, etc. At this time, it seems that the temporary solution in order to pay employees is to charge personal leave balances and then go back and correct once the COVID coding is available. AASD is working with the District (Payroll and Labor Relations) to get an idea of when the coding will be implemented and how this will affect our members who may have been out this summer. Stay tuned for more information.
Q: I noticed in the AASD MOU that a “hotline” for AASD members to call with school reopening issues, conflicts regarding health and safety procedures, etc., was negotiated. What is the phone number? I don’t recall receiving it.
A: (Answer provided by AASD) The district is in the process of staffing and implementing the hotline for all AASD members. We will provide the phone number as soon as it is available. The hotline will be staffed by a trusted management-level colleague who will be very helpful to our members.
Several comments were submitted about conflicting information being given to secondary principals. The concerns have been shared with executive leadership.
