DAILY UPDATE #109 -- 8/25/2020

  • AASD OFFICE CLOSURE.
AASD will be sending out a Daily Update, Monday-Friday, throughout the return to instruction/school reopening period.  The Weekly Update will continue as usual on Thursdays with the typical news and information for AASD members.  The AASD Office continues to remain closed.  AASD staff are working remotely and can be reached via the contact information at the end of this Update.

AASD has created a Google Form for AASD Members to report issues, questions or concerns regarding work-related issues, COVID-19, return to instruction and school reopening.  AASD will provide answers to issues, questions or concerns submitted as answers become available.  You may also share your gratitude for another AASD member, district personnel, etc., via the same link.

The link to share issues/questions/concerns/gratitude is:

Please do not share this link outside of AASD membership (classified and certificated management/supervisors).  The link will be active until this crisis is over.

  • Q and A (Tuesday, August 25, 2020)
Q:  Much of our work needs to be done on the weekends due to the fact that we received details so late. Are we able to pay ourselves for weekend work to catch up on opening items...even though we are on calendar?
A:  (Answer from AASD)  This question is presumably from a Principal.  If so, the answer is:  Unfortunately, as salaried certificated management, you are not permitted to receive overtime or extra time during your regular calendared work days.  You are able to pay extra time, pro-rate pay for any time worked during the break this past summer.

Several questions have come up regarding BSS III’s and POS’ being assigned the task of taking the temperatures of SDEA MEMBERS/TEACHERS and cleaning the classrooms of SDEA MEMBERS/TEACHERS who elect to teach on campus.

Guidelines have been distributed through custodial operations, but to clarify and reiterate --  AASD members (BSS III, POS, Principal, Vice Principal, etc.) are NOT required to be part of the temperature-taking process for SDEA MEMBERS/TEACHERS.  In the bargained agreement with SDEA, it is clear that SDEA MEMBERS/TEACHERS are to work with the principal to set up a system to “buddy up” and take and record their own temperatures (SDEA member to SDEA member).  In addition, only the SDEA MEMBER/TEACHER assigned to the classroom may enter their classroom and is responsible for any clean up or dumping of trash.  AASD members (BSS III, POS, Principal, Vice Principal, etc.) are NOT to enter the classroom and perform these duties.  (This also applies to BSS I and BSS II; however, AASD does not represent those job classifications.)  Please address any questions to Donis Coronel at AASD if you are being expected or assigned these duties.

  • SPECIAL EDUCATION - HOW TO MEET SAI HOURS LIVE
    • SAI hours are determined by the IEP team on how to support students to meet their goals. This is documented in special factors.
    • Oftentimes it states: collaboration, consultation, co-teaching, and small group. SAI hours could be provided all those ways and only the direct service (co-teaching and small group) would be live.
      • For example, if a student has 5 hours of SAI for math, 3 hours could be co-teaching, 1 hour could be small groups and 1 hour could be collaboration/consultation. The 4 hours of co-teaching and small group is provided synchronously and 1 hour of collaboration/consultation is during flex time.
      • Ed Specialists should document how they are meeting the hours and can share with teachers and principals.

  • PRINCIPAL INSTITUTE - DOUG FISHER SLIDE DECK

  • SECONDARY UPDATE - CAP AND GOWN COMPANIES
    • The contracts for our two cap and gown vendors, Jostens and SD Grad Supply, expire on August 31st. New contracts are set to be approved by the board in October.
    • School sites should NOT have cap and gown measurements or orders taken until after November 1st.
    • Sites can still allow the vendors to advertise other graduation regalia, such as announcements, keepsakes, etc., since those items are not part of the district contract.

  • The following communication was sent to Principals on August 25:

  • EDUCATOR PD COMMUNICATION
  • COMMUNICATE SCHOOL SCHEDULE WITH FAMILIES
    • As we near the first day of school, we need to make sure that our students and families are prepared for a successful start to the school year.
    • Please ensure that you have communicated with parents and students your school’s schedule to include: teacher information, classroom hours and any necessary school and classroom links.
    • Suggestions for communication include:
      • Share communication directly to families via phone calls, emails, and other means
      • Post information on your school website
      • Send a video overview
      • Encourage families/students to log into Clever
      • Directions on how students can find their student ID and password information
    • As this is not a typical school opening, waiting for the Friday before or the morning of school, is not best practice for this transitional time.
    • Families should have all the information to make necessary arrangements for next week, in order to be a partner in the teaching and learning of their child.

  • PREPARING FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL----IT’S SHOWTIME!
    • This key document is for principals and teachers to use to help prepare for a successful first day of school for all students.
    • There are key tasks that need to be completed to ensure a strong start to online learning. It includes suggestions for getting parents and families connected now, before the first day on August 31.
