  • MESSAGE FROM AASD REGARDING PHASES 2-4
Over the past 10 days, the AASD Executive Board and Bargaining Teams met twice with district leadership to receive a draft preview and presentation on Phases 2-4.  AASD was asked by district leadership to keep the information confidential as there are many details to be worked out during bargaining.  AASD was told by district leadership that the same “confidentiality” conversation was had with SDEA during the recent presentation/bargaining.  AASD strictly adhered to the agreement for confidentiality.

Yesterday, SDEA sent “Bargaining Notes” to all of their membership which detailed information about Phases 2-4.  This caused angst (and rightfully so) amongst AASD members who contacted AASD concerned because they found out the proposed details about Phases 2-4 from their SDEA staff and not from district leadership.

AASD immediately contacted Chief of Staff Staci Monreal who confirmed both AASD and SDEA were given the same information about confidentiality due to the fact the district had not yet noticed site administrators and the community about the plans for Phases 2-4.  Today, AASD met with Superintendent Cindy Marten for further conversation regarding this matter.

Superintendent Marten and Chief of Staff Monreal said they would send a letter to principals today regarding the communication breakdown between the District and SDEA, and the plan for upcoming phases.  AASD confirmed that the letter was sent to principals today via the district's Principal Update.  AASD will share this letter in tomorrow's AASD Daily Update.  There is no timeline attached to this plan.  It is a plan for when it is safe to move to Phases 2-4.

AASD clearly understands why our members would be upset about not receiving the information prior to the membership of SDEA receiving it.  AASD is an organization that operates with integrity and when AASD agrees to confidentiality, AASD follows that agreement.

AASD will be entering into bargaining in the next couple of weeks over Phases 2-4.

  • FOR AASD CERTIFICATED MEMBERS (SPECIFICALLY PRINCIPALS AND VICE PRINCIPALS) REGARDING PAYMENT FOR HOURS WORKED FOR SCHOOL REOPENING (PHASE ONE OR PRIOR)
It has come to AASD’s attention that Principals and Vice Principals who worked hours outside of their contract day or contract work year planning for school reopening or Phase 1 may have been notified by Payroll that they are not eligible for this additional pay.  This appears to only affect AASD represented certificated members (not teachers or support staff).  AASD worked with the district today and the issue has been resolved.  Payroll will be notified today that the pay is appropriate and to move forward to pay it.  Thank you to members who brought this to AASD’s attention.  If anyone continues to have an issue and isn’t paid for this time, please contact AASD.

  • DISTRICT COMMUNICATIONS
The following communication was sent to principals on October 20:

  • GRADING POLICY
    • During the Secondary Leadership Lab today, we clarified the expectations for all schools for the implementation of the new grading policy adopted by our Board on October 13, 2020.
    • Beginning with Quarter 2, educators who are not already following these guidelines will need to:
      • Remove non-academic factors from academic grades
      • Provide opportunities for retakes and revisions
    • Contact Nicole DeWitt with questions.

  • ACCESS TO UPDATE CASE MANAGER THROUGH STUDENT PROFILE
    • IT has created a job aid that outlines the steps to add a Case Manager’s name through the Special Education Profile in PowerSchool IEP.

  • FREE FLU CLINICS
    • San Diego Health & Human Services Agency will host six free flu clinics across the County, starting Thursday, Oct 22. Walk-ins are welcome. Flu shots will be available for ages 6 months old and up.
    • Please share attached fliers (English, Spanish) with the families you support.
    • Here is some additional messaging for your consideration:
      • Get a flu shot. Getting a flu shot helps keep you from falling ill and passing it on to others. Moreover, avoiding flu-like symptoms means fewer referrals for COVID-19 testing and fewer individuals unnecessarily put into isolation and quarantine. When the percentage of people without flu shots is high, there are more hospitalizations and even deaths from flu complications, among those who are vulnerable. This year, we must all do our best to keep hospital beds open for those who need them for COVID-19-related complications. Please do your part by getting a flu shot!
