  • AASD CONGRATULATES THE 46TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – JOSEPH R. BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS
The swearing-in of our nation’s 46th President and the first woman, first black, first South Asian vice president, amidst an unprecedented global pandemic, is historic and “marks a new chapter for the American people.” The administration of Biden-Harris is not a victory of party, but an opening of an era calling for common purpose and civility, of inclusiveness and tolerance, of empathy and grace.

Yet, the raging pandemic, the violent social and economic upheaval, the insurrection on the Capitol, and the open division among Americans, gives one pause to reflect that this new administration will have a seemingly insurmountable hill to climb in restoring confidence in America’s democracy, and uniting us.

Amanda Gorman’s inauguration poem, The Hill We Climb, eloquently captures in these few sentences the challenge and the optimism that has been the spirit of America since its founding:

We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.
And this effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed, It can never be permanently defeated.
In this truth, in this faith we trust.
For while we have our eyes on the future, History has its eyes on us.

After more than 200 years, the building of a more perfect nation continues to be unfinished work. Let us be inspired by this new day. Let us model for our children perseverance, inner strength and daily acts of courage. And let us show the world that the American spirit is still alive and well.

  • Q and A (Wednesday, January 20, 2021)
Q:  Whenever there are any technical issues happening across the district ALL STAFF need to receive an email IMMEDIATELY. Last week, Clever was not working and we had no idea so each person thinks it's just them until they start talking to others and trying to figure out what's going on. People should not waste their time doing this. We need to be informed immediately. In addition, with this ridiculous new website we can't find anything so we tried searching for the page that used to tell us what programs were offline or experiencing problems, but good luck finding anything. Communication continues to be an ongoing problem and that is mind boggling.
A:  (Answer provided by the District)    Clever did have some spotty outages, but was unfortunately not well communicated.  IT did not have info about it being widespread and will follow-up with the vendor on better communications so we can relay more timely information to all staff.
For systems status, there are a couple of ways to check:

    https://itd.sandiegounified.org/home
    or
    https://status.sandi.net

Q:   Site Deadlines: On 1/14 Principals received an email from the OLA department about Reclassification and that all paperwork is due to OLA by January 29, 2021. This is a thoughtful process that requires the efforts of principal, teachers, students and parents and being given 10 days to accomplish this is disappointing, noting that there was a Holiday on 1/18. The pathway to Reclassification is so significant for English Learners and while we probably can request an extension if needed to complete this, I think it's important to address this so that departments are aware of the pressure and stress that short timelines put on Principals.
A:  (Answer provided by the District)    If a school needs an extension to complete the process, please contact Theresa Laskowski (
tlaskowski@sandi.net) to discuss.  We want to ensure that all students who qualify are Reclassified on time.
