AASD Weekly Update 12-16-2021

NEW ITEMS

  • BARGAINING UPDATE.
Full Contract Bargaining.  The AASD bargaining teams met with the District yesterday December 15.  AASD presented a proposal on a new article for the certificated contract that addresses the summer programs including staffing and compensation.  Remember, this is a PROPOSAL.  There is no response yet from the District and no tentative agreement between the parties.  AASD feels strongly that our certificated members must be fairly compensated for the work.  Please click below to see AASD’s proposal.  AASD is scheduled to meet with the District again on January 6.  However, the district will not have an opportunity to share our proposal with Board of Education members prior to that date so we may not have any additional information to share.

  • HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE AASD BOARD OF DIRECTORS.  The AASD Board of Directors wishes all AASD Members in Good Standing, Affiliate Members and Retired Members a happy holiday season.  Please enjoy your time off work with your family and friends.  The AASD office will be closed during the two week winter break.  For urgent matters, please contact AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, by e-mail donis@aasdcs.org or by cell phone 619-813-8792.  The office will reopen on January 3.

  • JIM COSTELLO, AASD OFFICE/MEMBERSHIP CLERK IS RETIRING!  Please join us in wishing Jim Costello a happy, healthy and joyful retirement.  Jim joined AASD 5 ½ years ago after retiring from BF Goodrich.  Jim has been wonderful to work with and a true supporter of our members and our retirees and we will miss him.  While we are in the process of filling Jim’s position, he has agreed to work remotely on the memberships tasks and for that we are grateful.  At the December 15 AASD Board of Directors meeting, Jim was presented by the Board with the traditional AASD retirement clock and a nice gift.  Congratulations, Jim!  We appreciate all you have done for us here at AASD.  Happy Retirement!

  • DO YOU HAVE STUDENT LOANS?  A STORY FROM A PRINCIPAL IN SDUSD.  AASD received the following from one of our members.  We are not advocating that this will work for everyone but who knows?  It may be worth a try if you have student loan debt!

From a Principal:  “I’m not sure what you can do with this but I thought I’d tell you as it might help others.   Under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program with FEDLOAN I have been denied forgiveness for several reasons. One was I was not on an income based plan but a fixed amount and refused to get on a IC plan. It would of cost me up to 1200 a month. I figured I would just have to pay $500 like a mortgage every single month forever.  Biden then came out in October the Temporary Public Service Loan Forgiveness plan. It says you have one year to apply. However I believe it’s a trick because FedLoan is dumping loans to private lenders to avoid forgiving anything in January. We have been notified of this extensively for months…once privatized they can charge whatever interest they want and they aren’t forgiven.  I decided to apply asap and “make them tell me no AGAIN” I knew I didn’t meet one of the requirements or I thought I didn’t. I hoped they would review my application in time for January before it went private.  They got back to me on Friday - seven weeks after I applied. They forgave ALL of my loans. $80,000. Not a typo.  I am now debt free!  Here is the link to everything Administrators need to do to apply. I say all should apply and let them tell you no. The application is easy.  It was a huge relief. I felt like I won the lottery.  Administrators deserve what we were promised all those years ago which was forgiveness.”

    SPECIAL GRATITUDE
    From Jim Costello, AASD Staff
As I complete my last official weekly update moving into retirement, I want to express my thanks and gratitude to all our members for making my five and a half years at AASD a pleasure. I give special thanks to the Board of Directors and Executive Board for welcoming me into the AASD family. I simply can’t say enough about working with Linda Crout-Hamel and Donis Coronel. As a small team we worked together to complete many tasks; managed committee meetings, held many educational and social events, supported our members with a smile and especially enjoyed each other’s company. I will truly miss seeing them in the office on a regular basis, however our friendship will long continue.
    Cheers! Jim

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
