  • AASD AASD FOCUS GROUPS – CLERICAL FORMULA AND SPED.  Thank you to those who volunteered to participate in these AASD focus groups.  You should have received an e-mail and calendar invitations for upcoming meetings.  If you did not receive this information, please contact Donis at AASD (donis@aasdcs.org).

  • BREAKING NEWS FROM ACSA: Student vaccine mandate bill will not advance this session.  Sen. Richard Pan (SD 6) announced today that he has held Senate Bill 871, which would have added COVID-19 vaccinations to the list of required immunizations for school-aged children, without a personal belief exemption.  “Until children’s access to COVID vaccination is greatly improved, I believe that a state-wide policy to require COVID vaccination in schools is not the immediate priority, although it is an appropriate safety policy for many school districts in communities with good vaccine access,” Pan said.  He stated that while Senate Bill 871 will not move forward, the Legislature still needs to enact policies to protect California’s children from COVID-19 and shared his support for measures that establish school-based COVID testing plans, a statewide immunization registry and vaccine access for minors ages 12-17.  The announcement comes just 24 hours after Pan appeared as a guest on the ACSA Legislative Lunch Break to promote the vaccination proposal. On the show, ACSA members shared their concerns about the mandate, despite general support for vaccinations and vaccine access.  Earlier this year, legislation seeking to impose a workplace vaccine mandate (Assembly Bill 1933 by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks) was also pulled back by the author.  ACSA will continue to keep members updated on the movement of priority legislation during this session.

  • IMPORTANT FOR ALL AASD MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING AND RETIRED MEMBERS WHO ARE WORKING FOR SDUSD – KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!  If any AASD Member in Good Standing or Retired Member who is working is contacted by the Quality Assurance Office (QAO) or Human Resources to attend an interview (whether they are the subject of a complaint or a witness in regards to a complaint), AASD highly suggests that the member respond that they would like to have their AASD representative present for the interview and copy the AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, (donis@aasdcs.org) on the correspondence.  If any member is denied the right to have their AASD representative present, please contact the AASD Executive Director immediately for assistance (donis@aasdcs.org or 619-813-8792).  While AASD highly suggests you have your union representative present, it is the member’s personal choice to attend alone if they wish.

  • QUESTIONS ABOUT PPI DAYS AND CARRYOVER?   AASD is receiving many questions about Personal and Professional Improvement (PPI) days and how many can be carried over from year to year.  FYI, every AASD represented member earns four (4) PPI days each July 1 (or at any time they enter the AASD unit throughout the fiscal year).  For both AASD classified and certificated members, the contract allows for eight (8) days to be carried over each year.  By June 30, each year the balance must be at eight (8) days of less.  HOWEVER, for certificated school site members ONLY -- there is a caveat for this year.  If a certificated member was a school site administrator during spring break 2020 (COVID shutdown), then that person earned three (3) extra PPI days.  And then if that same administrator worked at a year-round site during spring break 2020, they earned three (3) additional PPI days for a total of six (6) days.  For this year, members are permitted to carry over the eight (8) days plus either three (3) or six (6) additional days from spring break 2020.  This means a total of eleven (11) or fourteen (14) days carryover.  Note that for June 2023, PPI balances must be down to eight (8) days or less. No more than eight (8) days will be carried over on June 30, 2023.  Confused?  Check with your timekeeper for your current PPI day balance and then contact Donis Coronel at AASD for assistance (donis@aasdcs.org).

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
