DONIS CORONEL, AASD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PRESENTED WITH AWARD. At the AASD Summerfest last Friday, AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, was surprised when she was presented with the first ever“Donis Coronel Legacy Award” for her dedication and hard work with AASD. AASD President, Dr. Jolie Pickett, read the following statement:
“Donis has been involved with AASD since the 90’s but she first assumed the Executive Director staff position full time in 2017. She has already been helping to lead AASD as an Officer out of debt and into being a financially solvent organization since 2012. In 2018, Donis led our organization through the US Supreme Court Janus decision, after which AASD had an insignificant loss of memberships due to her strategizing and communication skills. In 2019, Donis was the one to lead AASD from being a stand-alone union of only about 500 members to becoming part of the only nationwide administrators union by joining the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA). AFSA is over 20,000 members strong. In 2020…it was the start of the pandemic. Donis fielded the most stress calls she has ever experienced at any one time from our AASD members and she provided resources for our members to be able to manage their work. Currently, Donis is working on her vision of an umbrella organization that will connect administrator groups throughout Southern California. You will soon be hearing more about the United Administrators Southern California (UASC). It will make San Diego’s AASD a leader in assisting and networking with all Southern California administrator groups. And Chula Vista is the first administrator group to sign on with UASC. One of the most important impacts Donis has had is leading AASD with integrity and professionalism. That is what builds the culture of our entire organization. Those values are in our AASD Bylaws and we are all expected to conduct ourselves accordingly. We may not always all do that, but Donis models these values for all of us. And she leads with her experience and expertise in labor relations and human resources – her smartness, toughness…with a little edge….and always with compassion and always caring. Each of the these accomplishments I mentioned are huge and impactive organization-changing leadership moves. Accomplishing just one of these things during a tenure is significant; accomplishing and developing all of these things truly leaves a legacy that will be hard to top in the future.”
AASD Member Relations Committee Co-Chair, Susan Kent, made the following presentation, “Tonight the Member Relations Committee is inaugurating a new award that will only be given to those persons whose impact on AASD is profound and transformational due to their leadership, dedication and their hard work. On behalf of AASD, the Member Relations Committee and President Pickett, we would like to present to Donis Coronel the first ever “Donis Coronel Legacy Award." Congratulations, Donis, and thank you for your outstanding leadership of AASD!”
Donis would like all AASD members and colleagues to know how humbled and grateful she is for this honor. It was a true surprise and she is very honored to be presented with this prestigious legacy award.

It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members. Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME. If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so. This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.
Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again. If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.
