AASD Weekly Update 8/31/2023

NEW ITEMS

RSVP REQUIRED ...
  • CORRECTION TO LINK IN RETURN-TO-WORK MOU.  In last week’s Update, it was discovered there was an incorrect link in body of the MOU to report environmental safety concerns.  Original MOU:  2023-08-22 AASD MOU Impacts and Effects of Return to Work
    The correct link is:
    https://staff.sandiegounified.org/departments/environmental_health___safety_office

If you are concerned with an environmental issue, hazardous condition or behavior, or have a safety suggestion: EHS Reporting Form

  • CHANGES IN WHEN PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS OCCUR.  Typically, payroll deductions for union dues are deducted from the end of September through the end of June paychecks (10 deductions a fiscal year).  With the change in the start and end dates of the school year, now June and July 2024 (and ongoing) are months when 10-month employees will not receive a paycheck.  Therefore, payroll deductions can no longer be taken from the end of June check.  Payroll is now deducting payroll deductions for union dues from the end of August to the end of May paychecks for all employees.  That is still 10 deductions in a FISCAL year but the first deduction comes out in August (yesterday’s paycheck), and the last deduction comes out in May 2024, and there is no longer an end of June deduction.

Per Payroll, deductions for voluntary insurances and Flexible Spending Accounts operate on a CALENDAR year will still be deducted September through June.  If any change happens in respect to those type of deductions, Payroll will notify employees.

  • LEGISLATIVE AND POLITICAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE REPORT - Both Appropriation Committees are at the end of their busiest week of the year in order to meet today’s deadline. Each committee will review over 200 bills in their respective suspense files. Between September 5 through September 14, the Assembly and Senate will only have floor sessions to approve or deny bills before going to the Governor by the September 14 deadline. Follow the bills for which AASD has taken positions by following our Legislative Chart.

  • AASD SUPPORTS OUR MEMBERS.  Read below for an example of how AASD serves  our members.

An AASD member in good standing has reported a serious incident where they feel their safety is compromised.  AASD Executive Director has contacted HR who is intervening.  If needed, a meeting to develop a safety plan will be scheduled.

This is another example of what AASD does to support our members.  If you need assistance from AASD, please contact the office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail the Executive Director, Donis Coronel, at  donis@unitedadmin.us.

  • SPECIAL GRATITUDE
When members wish to show their gratitude for other district staff, please contact Donis Coronel at  donis@unitedadmin.us and AASD will publish that message of gratitude in the next Weekly Update.

AASD AASD received the following e-mail from one of our recent retirees (classified):
Received August 25:  I'm so very thankful and grateful for AASD's efforts over the years, especially during the dark COVID times, which was challenging, exciting, and dreadful all at once. The experience really wiped me out, as it did a lot of us. But still, between the Union and the District, I feel we were treated fairly given the circumstances, and exiting at this time, with the retro and the unused sick time augmenting my years of service and the cash out of unused vacation and now the final longevity stipend, the windfall is helping tremendously with needed projects around the property and killing a few old debts. Even the temporary monthly stipend from AASD to offset Medicare is a help, as every dollar these days is important.

It's horrible how those 'mailers' kept on coming every few months to get people to "save money!" every month by opting out of contributing to a Union. Clever wording, ultimately designed to weaken and eventually destroy Unions. Gleefully tore each one of them to shreds. These rights were won over decades of blood, sweat and tears - I bristle when folks state I'm 'lucky' to have been Unionized. "Luck" had nothing to do with it - the tireless dedication and fight for workers' rights made it what it is, and I hope generations coming up will understand their importance and significance in the history of fairness and justness.

With continued awe and respect for all you do...

  • CONDOLENCES
AASD acknowledges deaths of our members, retirees, or their immediate family members via the Weekly Update.  If you have information on a death to be reported in the AASD Weekly Update, please contact any of the staff at the AASD office with the information.  We appreciate your help with this – we don’t always know right away when a death has occurred or the information on services.

Robert “Bob” Kuhl, the former Associate Principal at Logan Memorial Education Complex (LMEC) passed away on July 22, 2023 following a diagnosis of a brain tumor in 2018.  He is survived by his wife, Christine and two children, as well as a host of family and friends.  Click here for a beautiful obituary written by his niece.  (Kuhl obituary)

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
