The District and AASD signed NEW REVISED/IMPROVED agreements since the information was originally shared in the AASD Weekly Update to now allow for a retirement date at the conclusion of the 2024 summer school program.  Please see the new information in the bullets below.

The agreements provide a one-time, lump-sum payment of $1,000 to retirement-eligible employees who complete and submit their retirement form by January 15, 2024. Specific terms, including obligations around a participating employee’s last day in service, vary slightly by bargaining unit.  Please see specifics below:

    • Certificated Employees: Retirement date between June 7, 2024 and June 30, 2024
    • Classified Employees: Retirement date between March 15, 2024 and June 30, 2024
    • NEW ELIGIBILITY- Both Units: Retirement date of July 12, 2024 for unit members on calendar during summer school and/or working a summer school assignment.
    • NOTE THAT SOME AASD MEMBERS ARE NOT ON CALENDAR UNTIL JULY 12 CHECK YOUR SPECIFIC WORK CALENDAR.  EXAMPLE:  ELEMENTARY AND MID-LEVEL PRINCIPALS ARE ON CALENDAR THROUGH JULY 2.  THEREFORE, THEIR LAST DAY WITH SDUSD WILL BE JULY 2.

  • Additionally, employees who provide notification and retire during the windows above and by June 30, 2024, but who, pursuant to their respective Collective Bargaining Agreement, would have been entitled to a longevity payment for the 2023-2024 fiscal year as an active employee on July 1st, will still receive the longevity stipend when payments are processed in September 2024.

In order to receive the one-time payment, eligible employees must complete and submit the retirement notification form to Human Resources by the close of business on January 15, 2024. The retirement notification form is located on the
HR website and the completed form must be returned via email to hrdocuments@sandi.net.

The revised date of July 12 allows AASD members to use their four PPI days that are earned on July 1, 2024.  Additionally, the July 12 date allows employees who are retiring to have district-paid health insurance for the month of July.

  • A NEW YEAR OF UNITY, STRENGTH, AND PROGRESS FOR OUR UNION.  As we bid farewell to the past and usher in the promise of a new year, the AASD Board of Directors and Staff extend our warmest wishes to each and every one of you.  May 2024 bring you prosperity, good health, and success.  This coming year will be filled with challenges, triumphs, and the unwavering dedication of our AASD union members.  Together we will demonstrate the power of solidarity, resilience, and the collective spirit that defines AASD.  Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to each other and the work that binds us together.  Our AASD union is not just an organization, it is a family of individuals who share common goals, dreams, and the belief that through collaboration we can achieve our goals.  This year we will face challenges and there will be opportunities.  It is our sincere hope that we can approach these with the same unity and determination that have fueled past successes.  Remember, our strength lies not only in the number of union members we have but in our ability to stand united in the face of adversity.  Let us continue to foster an environment of mutual support and respect within our union.  We will have members whose jobs will be eliminated and need all of our support.  In the spirit of solidarity, be there for one another.  May this new year bring us closer to our collective goals, as we strive to create better working conditions, fair wages, and a bright future for all.  The AASD Board of Directors and Staff wish you and your loved ones a happy New Year.

  • BUDGET CUTS/POSITION ELIMINATIONS.  If you are notified by your supervisor that your position is being eliminated effective June 30 – please contact AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, for support.  donis@unitedadmin.us or 619-813-8792.

  • PRINCIPALS AND AP’S – HAVE YOU BEEN ASSIGNED 1:1 COACHING OR MENTORING OF ANOTHER PRINCIPAL OR AP?    As most know, AASD has contract language allowing Principals and AP's to be assigned as a 1:1 coach/mentor to a new Principal or AP.  There is an annual stipend for doing this work.  For the 2023-24 school year, AASD was told that there would not be any 1:1 coach/mentor work assigned to Principals or AP's as another department would be handling that work.  Therefore, no stipends would be paid.  AASD is hearing from some Principals that they are being asked to coach/mentor new Principals.  No stipend is being paid.  Please complete the survey below so AASD can ascertain how prevalent this issue is and what AASD's next steps are.  Please complete the survey by January 8.

  • STATE PRESCHOOL STIPEND.  AASD negotiated language that was Board approved in July regarding a new, one-time stipend for school administrators who have/had a State Pre School onsite.  Here is the language:

    12.00 STATE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM STIPEND
The designated site administrator of a site with a State Preschool program will receive a one-time stipend of $600 in recognition of the State requirement to attend an orientation, preventative health training, and provide proof of vaccination status.  This stipend will be paid one-time in the school year that the designated site administrator completes these requirements.

This $600 stipend will be paid to any designated site administrator that had a State Preschool program at their site in the 2022-2023 school year.  Then, in the future, the stipend would be paid to any newly appointed designated site administrator to a site that has a State Preschool program or to any designated site administrator where a State Preschool program is newly added to their site, after that designated site administrator completes the requirements.

The stipend was scheduled to be paid in November; however, that did not occur.  Payroll just confirmed that the stipend was paid by a physical check that was mailed the week prior to winter break to the home address of those eligible.  Thank you to the Payroll staff for getting the checks out before the holidays.  If you believe you are entitled to the stipend and did not receive it, please contact AASD’s Executive Director, Donis Coronel,
    donis@unitedadmin.us, after the holidays.

  • CONDOLENCES
AASD acknowledges deaths of our members, retirees, or their immediate family members via the Weekly Update.  If you have information on a death to be reported in the AASD Weekly Update, please contact any of the staff at the AASD office with the information.  We appreciate your help with this – we don’t always know right away when a death has occurred or the information on services.

It is with tremendous sadness that AASD shares the passing of our recently retired AASD Membership Clerk, James “Jim”  Costello.  Jim passed away unexpectedly on December 14, 2023, with his devoted partner and husband, Brian Kenworthy, at his side.  Brian and Jim spent 36 wonderful years together and celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary on December 1, 2023.

Jim spent his career in Management in the finance industry with Goodrich Corporation/Rohr, Intuit, Laidlaw Waste Management and WorldExchange.  After retiring, he was then hired for the part-time Membership/Office Clerk position at AASD in 2016.  Donis, Linda and Jim made a great team at AASD and worked together for six years until Jim retired in January 2022.  After retiring, Jim was kind enough to continue to work remote for AASD part-time until his replacement was hired in early 2023.

In Jim’s work at AASD, he was loyal to our members and was always a smiling face at the check-in table at all AASD events.  He also supported all of our committees in their work.  He was funny, kind, compassionate and understood the work of our Union.   He truly cared about our members.  He made many lifelong friends during his tenure at AASD.  Donis and Linda considered Jim “family.”

Those who knew Jim knew that he loved his cruises!  Jim was a part-time travel consultant for Expedia and booked many cruises for his clients.  He and Brian took well over 20 cruises and enjoyed every minute of each one.  They loved to travel.  Jim also enjoyed  good restaurants, musicals, concerts and most importantly, CHER!  Next time you hear a Cher song, think of Jim.  He also had his two beautiful cats, Jake and Lily, who he adored.

Jim’s husband, Brian Kenworthy, is a long-time SDUSD classified manager and an AASD member in good standing who also serves on the AASD Bargaining Team.

Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go to Brian and all of the Costello/Kenworthy family.  Jim was loved by so many at AASD and in his personal life, and he will be missed.  Condolences may be sent to Brian Kenworthy, 3635 7th Ave, Unit 2E, San Diego 92103-4343.

AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
