AASD Weekly Update 2/01/2024

  • BE SAFE!  To all of our members – stay safe during this week’s storms!  We recognize the stress and hard work that you have all taken on with grace and dedication to keep our students, staff, community and families safe.  Thank you for all you do!
  • ESTATE PLANNING – DISCOUNT FOR AASD MEMBERS!  After some time away from this legal work to attend training for his full-time job as a police officer, Greg Runge, Estate Planning Attorney, has renewed his partnership with AASD.  Greg has over 15 years of experience practicing in the areas of wills, trusts, durable powers of attorney, and advance health care directives.  He has been providing this service to our members for many years.  In addition to his legal work, Greg is a Lieutenant with a local police department, where he is in his 25th year of service as a sworn officer.  As a public employee, Greg is very aware of the unique estate planning issues that can come into play with our members. Greg has focused his legal practice on providing essential estate planning services to public employees and their families at an affordable rate.  This benefit is available to all AASD Members in Good Standing, AASD Affiliate Members and AASD Retired Members.
Greg is offering this service to our members for a flat fee of $950, which is 50% off the going rate for estate planning (more complex or very large estates may require a higher fee that would be individually negotiated with the member).

To contact Greg Runge, please e-mail
gregrunge@gmail.com or call (858) 395-4011 and be sure to mention you are an AASD member, so you receive the discounted rate.

  • AASD IS OFFERING VALUABLE ASSISTANCE.  Important for Any AASD Member in Good Standing Who is Affected Either by Position Elimination, Reorganization or Reassignment from an AASD Position to a Teaching Position.  AASD knows this is a difficult time for our affected members.  To assist with your career decisions going forward, AASD has contracted with and is funding a release time day (do not need to charge to any leave – this release day has been approved by the District) to participate in a full day training at the AASD office of “Career Coaching” provided by a certified coach – Mike Gellman, High Five Career Coaching.  Mike will work with attendees on resume writing, interview skills, LinkedIn profiles, and much more.  AASD will provide breakfast and lunch for all attendees.  Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity provided by your Union.  RSVP is required – click below to RSVP.  There are three dates this training will be offered.

  • UPDATE:  BUDGET CUTS/POSITION ELIMINATIONS/REASSIGNMENTS. There is no new information to share at this time.
Bargaining Impacts and Effects of the Reduction in Force.  AASD has demanded to bargain the Impacts and Effects of the decision to eliminate positions and/or reorganize departments.  The decision is that of the District; however, AASD has the right to bargain the “impacts and effects” on our members.  Information about this bargaining will be provided via the Weekly Update.

AP’S Who are Affected.  There are more questions right now than answers!  AASD is in contact with the District.  Discussions are continuing and information will be provided as soon as it is available.  We understand this is frustrating for many AP’s.
Post and Bid for Affected AASD Certificated Members.  If you were told that you can participate in SDEA Post and Bid (without priority consideration) this Spring, HR has confirmed that you were given misinformation.  AASD members are NOT eligible to participate in the Spring (May?) Post and Bid.  Once AASD received word from our affected members that they were told they could participate, AASD Executive Director questioned this and it was determined an error was made in the talking points given by HR to managers making the notifications to affected members.
Informational Zoom Meetings for Those AASD Members Who are Affected – These are meetings provided by AASD (not the District).  AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, will be holding
the final Zoom Informational Meeting as indicated below.  If you attended the Zoom on January 17 or February 1, it is not necessary to attend this final meeting, unless you want a repeat of information.  If you have been notified you are affected, please consider attending.
    February 5, 4:00-4:30 p.m.
    Join Zoom Meeting

    Meeting ID: 876 1715 2385
    Passcode: 150194

This week, many of our members will receive their Presidential Primary Election sample ballot. As your AASD representatives, our LAPA Committee met with nearly all the candidates who will represent Assembly districts that fall within SDUSD boundaries. The LAPA Committee then recommended the candidates that the committee felt would serve in the best interest of our members and our students. The AASD Board of Directors agreed with the committee’s recommendations and voted to endorse the following candidates:
Assembly District 77 - Tasha Boerner
                Assembly District 78 – Dr. Lashae Sharp-Collins
Assembly District 79 - Chris Ward
Assembly District 80 - David Alvarez
It was also our LAPA Committee intent to interview State Senate candidates campaigning for the 39th district this week but with the heavy rains affecting our campuses, our members, and staff, we cancelled the interviews. This allowed our committee members to be where they were needed – on their sites. With the elections being a few weeks away, the LAPA Committee will discuss the potential of waiting until after the Primary Election and interview the top two candidates.
Just as a reminder, our new 2024 Legislative Chart can be viewed by clicking
here. If you are interested in joining our LAPA Committee or would like more information about the great service our committee performs for our members, please contact Executive Director, Donis Coronel or email LAPA@unitedadmin.us. We always welcome new members to bring their knowledge and experience as we determine how new legislation can help or hurt our members.

  • AASD SUPPORTS OUR MEMBERS.  Read below for an example of how AASD serves  our members.

As we all prepare and work through this week’s storms, AASD has had an active voice in district meetings and has been supporting our members.
Additionally, AASD learned of an AASD member who lost their home and two cars in last week’s flooding.  AASD connected the member with UnionPlus and the member is likely eligible for a disaster grant (not a loan – a gift) to help the member and their family through this difficult time.

This is another example of what AASD does to support our members.  If you need assistance from AASD, please contact the office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail the Executive Director, Donis Coronel, at

AASD has been asked to publish the job postings in our Weekly Update.  AASD also suggests that all applicants (classified and certificated) mark their calendars to check weekly for new job postings each Monday.  This way, you will not miss out on a posting you might be interested in (as all jobs in the AASD unit must be posted for 10 days).

    AASD-Represented CERTIFICATED Job Postings

    None at this time.

    AASD-Represented CLASSIFIED Job Postings
    None at this time.

When members wish to show their gratitude for other district staff, please contact Donis Coronel at  donis@unitedadmin.us and AASD will publish that message of gratitude in the next Weekly Update.
AASD acknowledges deaths of our members, retirees, or their immediate family members via the Weekly Update.  If you have information on a death to be reported in the AASD Weekly Update, please contact any of the staff at the AASD office with the information.  We appreciate your help with this – we don’t always know right away when a death has occurred or the information on services.

  • ATTENTION PRINCIPALS AND ASSOCIATE PRINCIPALS WITH ELEMENTARY EXPERIENCE – PAR PANEL NEEDS A REPRESENTATIVE.  The Joint Panel is a committee panel that meets monthly to guide the work of consulting teachers who are supporting teachers in the classroom.  The work of the panel is guided by Article 18 of the SDEA contract and is made of SDEA members and site administrators.  The panel is currently looking for an AASD site administrator that has elementary experience.  The panel meets once a month on Thursdays in person at Taft Middle School typically from 4:30-6:45.  A stipend of $750 is paid each semester.  If you are interested, please email Michelle Vergne at mvergne@sandi.net by February 7.  A selection will be made at that time.

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
