AASD Weekly Update 2/08/2024

NEW ITEMS
RSVP REQUIRED ...
  • VENDOR PARTNERS FOR AASD/SDUSD SPRING CONFERENCE (MARCH 20).  Do you know of a vendor partner who might wish to have a vendor table to share their product at the AASD/SDUSD Spring Conference?  If so, send their contact information to Patti Burch in our AASD office.  patti@unitedadmin.us

  • WELCOME TO UASC.  UASC/AASD has hired an intern to help with special projects.  Please join Donis, Linda and Patti in welcoming Ricky Mendez (SDSU) to the team!  Ricky will be supporting not only AASD but our Chula Vista union also.

  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS WITH SDUSD BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
The San Diego Unified Board of Education wants to hear from you!  Community engagement sessions, both in person and virtually, have been planned for February and March, as well as Student Town Hall meetings.  The district is reaching out to the community for help in defining its goals for students.  Refer to the attached flyer for dates and more information.

  • AASD IS OFFERING VALUABLE ASSISTANCE.  Important for Any AASD Member in Good Standing Who is Affected Either by Position Elimination, Reorganization or Reassignment from an AASD Position to a Teaching Position.  AASD knows this is a difficult time for our affected members.  To assist with your career decisions going forward, AASD has contracted with and is funding a release time day (do not need to charge to any leave – this release day has been approved by the District) to participate in a full day training at the AASD office of “Career Coaching” provided by a certified coach – Mike Gellman, High Five Career Coaching.  Mike will work with attendees on resume writing, interview skills, LinkedIn profiles, and much more.  AASD will provide breakfast and lunch for all attendees.  Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity provided by your Union.  RSVP is required – click below to RSVP.  There are three dates this training will be offered.

  • UPDATE:  BUDGET CUTS/POSITION ELIMINATIONS/REASSIGNMENTS

Bargaining Impacts and Effects of the Reduction in Force.  AASD has demanded to bargain the Impacts and Effects of the decision to eliminate positions and/or reorganize departments.  The decision is that of the District; however, AASD has the right to bargain the “impacts and effects” on our members.  Information about this bargaining will be provided via the Weekly Update.

AP’S Who are Affected.  UPDATE:  AASD was notified on Tuesday, February 6, that the District has revisited the AP formula and this has resulted in any .333 allocations being changed to either .5 or 1.0.  Area Superintendents will be communicating with Principals regarding any change in allocation.  This is good news for many.  AASD has no additional information to share at this time but is seeking clarification.

Post and Bid for Affected AASD Certificated Members.  If you were told that you can participate in SDEA Post and Bid (without priority consideration) this Spring, HR has confirmed that you were given misinformation.  AASD members are NOT eligible to participate in the Spring (May?) Post and Bid.  Once AASD received word from our affected members that they were told they could participate, AASD Executive Director questioned this and it was determined an error was made in the talking points given by HR to managers making the notifications to affected members.

  • LEGISLATIVE AND POLITICAL AFFAIRS (LAPA) COMMITTEE REPORT
This week, many of our members will receive their Presidential Primary Election sample ballot. As your AASD representatives, our LAPA Committee met with nearly all the candidates who will represent Assembly districts that fall within SDUSD boundaries. The LAPA Committee then recommended the candidates that the committee felt would serve in the best interest of our members and our students. The AASD Board of Directors agreed with the committee’s recommendations and voted to endorse the following candidates:
Assembly District 77 - Tasha Boerner
                Assembly District 78 – Dr. Lashae Sharp-Collins
Assembly District 79 - Chris Ward
Assembly District 80 - David Alvarez

Just as a reminder, our new 2024 Legislative Chart can be viewed by clicking
here. If you are interested in joining our LAPA Committee or would like more information about the great service our committee performs for our members, please contact Executive Director, Donis Coronel or email LAPA@unitedadmin.us. We always welcome new members to bring their knowledge and experience as we determine how new legislation can help or hurt our members.

  • AASD SUPPORTS OUR MEMBERS.  Read below for an example of how AASD serves  our members.

Our UASC/AASD staff (Donis, Linda, Patti, and our new intern, Ricky) truly care about our members and are here to help.  When a member calls, texts, e-mails or comes to the office for assistance, our staff does everything possible to help the member or get answers to their questions.  We are here to help!  Reach out to us if you need us!

This is another example of what AASD does to support our members.  If you need assistance from AASD, please contact the office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail the Executive Director, Donis Coronel, at

  • CONDOLENCES
AASD acknowledges deaths of our members, retirees, or their immediate family members via the Weekly Update.  If you have information on a death to be reported in the AASD Weekly Update, please contact any of the staff at the AASD office with the information.  We appreciate your help with this – we don’t always know right away when a death has occurred or the information on services.

It is with great sadness that AASD shares that our Member in Good Standing, John Foster, Transportation Information Systems Supervisor, IT/Transportation Department, passed away unexpectedly on February 1.  John was a district employee for 42 years.  Our sincere condolences to the Transportation and IT departments, as well as to John’s family.

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
