AASD IS SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS ON THE AASD BOARD OF DIRECTORS. Nominations are being accepted for the AASD Board of Directors positions listed below. Members in Good Standing or Retired Members may nominate another member or self-nominations are accepted. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 23 at 5:00 p.m., with voting to take place in-person at the AASD Office on Wednesday, May 1, between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. (drop-in Membership Open House – see below for more information). If you are nominating another member or self-nominating, please send your nomination to Donis Coronel by April 23 at 5:00 PM.(donis@unitedadmin.us).
The commitment for serving on the Board of Directors includes monthly Board meetings (August to May starting with the 2024-25 school year) – typically on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 3:00 to 4:30 PM via Zoom (with an in-person meeting in December and May starting with the 2024-25 school year). Additionally, Board of Directors members are expected to attend AASD events, as appropriate. The term begins on July 1, 2024 and is a 2-year term. There are no term limits.

MEMBERSHIP OPEN HOUSE AND VOTING FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS – MAY 1, 2:30 TO 6:30 P.M.Join AASD on Wednesday, May 1 for an Open House and voting for the Board of Directors. Stop by the office any time between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., 3505 Camino del Rio South, Suite 264, in the Mission Valley area. Not only will you support your union by voting for your representatives on the Board of Directors, but you will also be eligible to win hundreds of dollars in door prizes! Everyone who stops by to vote receives a raffle ticket. You do not need to be present at the time of the drawings (at 6:15 p.m.) to win a prize. There will be beverages and appetizers. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE “ROOKIES OF THE YEAR!”Associate Principal, Daina Weber, Clairemont High School, and Associate Principal, "YY" Liew, Canyon Hills High School, were both selected as two of five SDUSD “Rookies of the Year!” AASD is so very proud of our two members and the contributions they have made at their school sites over the past year. Congratulations!
The Rookie of the Year (ROY) Recognition Program recognizes new SDUSD employees that exemplify effectiveness in service; contribute to a positive school or site climate; display dedication and passion through their work ethic; and show high levels of professionalism and compassion for their colleagues and their community. The SDUSD Rookie of the Year Recognition Program individually honors five newly hired employees across all sites and departments. The event honoring new employees provides an opportunity for board members, the public, the district leadership team, and the entire San Diego Unified Community to recognize, express gratitude, and celebrate the positive impact of individuals recently hired. Additionally, the program further emphasizes the district’s commitment to employee wellness and employee retention through positive affirmation and appreciation.
The Rookie of the Year program is sponsored and co-hosted by North Island Credit Union. Both the nominating employee and Rookie of the Year were invited to a recognition ceremony during a Padres game in a VIP Suite at PETCO Park on April 10, 2024. (Padres 10, Cubs 2)
CASINO NIGHT CANCELED As first announced on April 9, the AASD Scholarship Committee is sorry to report that Casino Night 2024 has been CANCELED. Unfortunately, we did not get the required participation/RSVPs needed to make it profitable to go forward with the April 19 event.
The Scholarship Committee would like to thank the many AASD members who made a donation to the AASD Scholarship Fund since the fundraising event was canceled. We appreciate you and thank you for your generous donations and support!
BUDGET CUTS/POSITION ELIMINATIONS/REASSIGNMENTS. Update: The Board of Education approved the position eliminations at the March 5 meeting. AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, attended over 65 meetings with affected members and Human Resources.
LAPA COMMITTEE REPORT. The San Diego County Register of Voters has certified the election results. As a result, our LAPA committee has recommended to continue to support our endorsed candidate for the general election in November. We will schedule State Senate district 39 candidate interviews for the near future. All the legislation being monitored can be viewed on our Legislative Report by clickinghere.

AASD sends sincere condolences to our AASDAffiliate Member, Clorinda “Clo” Haynes, Family Services Assistant (FSA), on the passing of her husband, Chuck Haynes. Chuck passed away surrounded by love on March 29 after complications following a heart transplant in October. Chuck was a frequent attendee with Clo at many AASD social events, always sitting with the Coronel and Crout-Hamel families. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 25. More information will be forthcoming via Facebook to friends and family of Clo and Chuck.

In a recent Wellness Subcommittee meeting, Optum presented information about Emotional Wellbeing Solutions (EWS). ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS/ASSOCIATE PRINCIPALS – COULD YOUR TK/KINDERS BENEFIT FROM AASD'S HOMEWORK KITS? Since 2014, AASD has been funding “homework kits” for incoming Kindergarten and TK students at a deserving elementary school (or schools). The Homework Kits are filled with school supplies that students can use at home when completing their homework. The kits are funded by AASD through fundraising efforts throughout the year.
If you would like your elementary site to be considered for the Homework Kits for the opening of the 2024-25 school year, please complete and submit the application no later than April 30, 2024. The AASD Member Relations Committee will review the applications and select the school(s) to receive the Homework Kits. The lucky school(s) will be announced at the beginning of June.

Finance Committee: Meets up to 4 times a year to develop a draft budget and monitor the finances of AASD. Chair is Gina Camacho-McGrath.
Legislative and Political Affairs Committee: Meets monthly to review and make recommendations regarding legislation that affects education and our schools/employees. The committee also interviews school board candidates and makes recommendations for endorsement to the AASD Board of Directors. The committee typically meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 4:00 p.m. in person at the UASC/AASD office with an option to join the meeting via Zoom. The Chair is Jesus Montana (Executive Board).
Member Relations Committee: Plans and supports the two large social events for members (Summerfest and the Winter Holiday Party) as well as provides support for any membership meetings. Responsible for the selection of AASD Distinguished Leaders annually. Coordinates the Homework Kits for UTK and Kinders at select schools. Responsible for other activities that support the membership. Typically meets monthly, the first Tuesday of the month from 3:30-5:00 PM in person with an option to join the meeting via Zoom. Co-Chairs are Susan Kent and Maria Moore-Flagg.
Professional Development Committee: Plans and coordinates the annual AASD/SDUSD Spring Conference each March. Also responsible for approving reimbursements to the Professional Growth Fund. Typically meets the first Wednesday of the month, as needed, 3:00-4:30 PM with an option to join the meeting via Zoom. Co-Chairs are Mario Garcia and Silvia Martinez.
Scholarship Committee: Plans an annual fundraising event (Casino Night). Coordinates the Scholarship Program including presentation of scholarships at school events. Meets monthly, as needed, typically the 4th Monday of the Month from 3:30-5:00 PM in person with an option to join the meeting via Zoom. Co-Chairs are Veronica Ortega and Sharon Rubalcava.

DISCOUNT MOVIE TICKETS. AASD has both AMC and Regal Entertainment Group (Regal/Edwards/UA) movie passes available to members in good standing, affiliate and retired members. Regal tickets are $9.00 each. These passes have no expiration date and are unrestricted, so they can be used any time and for newly-released movies.
The AMC tickets are $10.50 each, have no expiration date, and do not have any restrictions. Contact AASD to purchase tickets or if you have any questions.

If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so. However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

AASD COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTS ARE POSTED ON THE AASD WEBSITE.The collective bargaining agreements (contracts) for the AASD classified unit and the AASD certificated unit are posted on the AASD website. The District no longer provides a hard copy to AASD members. You are welcome to view the contracts on our website and feel free to print a copy, if you wish. AASD PROFESSIONAL GROWTH GRANT.The Administrators Association San Diego City Schools (AASD), in conjunction with the San Diego Unified School District, provides financial grants to members to assist them in their professional growth. Unit members who participate in professional development activities related to job-connected skills or potential careers with the District may qualify to have the cost of registration fees defrayed by available funds up to $100.
