AASD Weekly Update 5/16/2024

    It's almost here!  AASD's end-of-the-year celebration -
Summerfest!  Join your colleagues for Aloha Friday on June 14, 5:00-10:00 PM, at Marina Village, Baja Room, 1904 Quivira Way, San Diego 92109.  The evening will also include honoring our AASD Distinguished Leaders and our AASD Retiring Members.

    Summerfest is
FREE for all members - Members in Good Standing, Affiliate Members and Retired Members.  This festive, Hawaiian-themed party includes appetizers, dinner, dessert, and beverages.  Attendees will also enjoy music provided by our first-ever live band - 5 O'clock at Nikki's

Appetizers, buffet dinner, and dessert will be provided by Homestyle Hawaiian Catering.  The delicious menu includes Kalua Wontons, Lumpia (meat & veggie), and Musubi (Spam & tofu), Korean Chicken, Kalua Pig, Teriyaki Beef, Coconut Shrimp, Pancit (veggie), Steamed White Rice, Macaroni Salad, and Oriental Salad.  For dessert, a platter of Malasadas and Cookies will be served at each table.  Beverages will include sodas, iced tea, beer, wine and Mai Tai's.

In keeping with this fun, casual event, we hope you will embrace the Hawaiian theme and wear your aloha shirts, board shorts, and flip flops.  Let your inner surfer dude or hula dancer come out to play and join the fun!  The music will surely entice dancers to the dance floor to shake their grass skirts!

  • VOLUNTARY FURLOUGH DAYS FOR 2024-25.  AASD and the District have reached an agreement for VOLUNTARY furlough days for 12-month AASD Bargaining Unit Members.  Click here for the MOU.  Additional information will be forthcoming to eligible unit members.  IMPORTANT:  There is an impact to service credit with CalSTRS if any certificated member elects to take VOLUNTARY furlough days.  There does not appear to be a negative impact to classified members in CalPERS; however, an abundance of caution should be taken when choosing to participate in VOLUNTARY furlough days.  Please contact the AASD Executive Director, Donis Coronel, prior to volunteering for VOLUNTARY furlough days.
  • LAPA COMMITTEE REPORT.  With the May 17 deadline for any bill with a financial cost to pass their respective Appropriation Committees, the LAPA Committee is anticipating most of our monitored legislative bills to move forward to their respective house floors for a vote or die.

This past Monday, our LAPA Committee convened to discuss a crucial matter – the bills we have been closely monitoring, along with five additional bills. The committee strongly recommended to the Board of Directors to lend their support to Assembly Bill 2999, a bill that mandates the creation and implementation of a district-wide Homework Policy by SY 2027-28. Additionally, the committee proposed support for Assembly Bill 1195, a bill that grants students who complete an AP course at the end of the fall semester the opportunity to take their AP Exam at the same time, rather than waiting until the end of the school year.

The LAPA Committee also recommended supporting the following two bills if amended: Assembly Bill 1919 and 2711, which pertain to student suspensions and expulsions but are too restrictive in their implementation. Our
Legislative Status Report provides more information on these and all the bills we are monitoring.

We encourage you to reach out if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or recommendations. Our committee is readily available at
    LAPA@unitedadmin.us for further discussion.

  • AASD SUPPORTS OUR MEMBERS.  Read below for an example of how AASD serves  our members.

AASD files very few grievances as we like to work out contract issues before it gets to that point.  However, we are here for our members and will file a grievance on a contract violation, if appropriate.

This is another example of what AASD does to support our members.  If you need assistance from AASD, please contact the office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail the Executive Director, Donis Coronel, at

  • JOB POSTINGS FOR CERTIFICATED POSITIONS AND CLASSIFIED POSITIONS IN THE AASD UNIT.  AASD has been asked to publish the job postings in our Weekly Update.  AASD also suggests that all applicants (classified and certificated) mark their calendars to check weekly for new job postings each Monday.  This way, you will not miss out on a posting you might be interested in (as all jobs in the AASD unit must be posted for 10 days).

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
