AASD Weekly Update 1/8/2026

NEW ITEMS

RSVP REQUIRED ...
  • SDEA STRIKE ON FEBRUARY 26, 2026.  As many of you know, SDEA announced today that they will be holding a one-day strike on February 26.  The District’s response is below.  The District will be closing schools on the day of the strike (February 26) and will have March 9 (currently a non-instructional day) be designated as a student attendance day.  The information below is all AASD knows currently.  Switching instruction days may only directly impact AASD in terms of Mid-Level and Elementary Principals and AP’s and Food Services Supervisors and Food Service Area Supervisors as March 9 was an off-calendar day for them.  AASD has the right to bargain impacts and effects of this change and will keep members posted on information as it becomes available.

Communication from Superintendent Bagula.  Dear Leaders,  Our teacher’s union has announced a one-day strike on February 26, 2026, regarding Special Education staffing issues as part of a statewide California Teacher’s Association initiative to bring educator pay and benefits in alignment with generous school districts like San Diego Unified.  As discussed prior, it is important for us to maintain a healthy and harmonious learning environment for our students, along with maintaining the amount of instructional minutes. We will honor the SDEA strike and close schools on February 26, 2026. Closing schools for one day will ensure that students are not placed in situations where adequate supervision, instructional continuity, and campus safety cannot be reliably maintained.   Today, the central office is sending a communication to families to inform them they should begin to prepare to find alternative arrangements for their children. The make-up date for classes will be March 9th to ensure students receive the instructional time and services to support their success.  Undoubtedly, families will have questions about the strike, so I want to remind you to stay calm, and use the information we are providing to guide your responses. To support you, I am resharing:

  • AASD IS AWARDING $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO CHILDREN OF OUR AASD MEMBERS The AASD Scholarship is an award of $1,000 which is given to any AASD Member in Good Standing, Retired Member, or Affiliate Member’s child (including stepchild) who is a graduating senior this year and applies for the scholarship. In a previous Special Update ("Important News 12/30/2025"), AASD and the Superintendent notified members of the passing of our AASD President, colleague and friend, Irene Hightower on December 30.  Superintendent Message (Irene Hightower).  Services have been scheduled as follows and all are invited to attend.

SERVICES FOR IRENE BEATRICE HIGHTOWER – Monday, January 19, 2026
Services will be from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Road (you may wish to carpool).
A Committal Service will follow from 12:00 to 12:30 PM at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive.  If you are attending the committal service, you are asked to arrive by 11:30 AM.  Line up in your vehicle after the immediate family in Lane #1.  The service will be in committal shelter B.

Irene was an avid San Diego Padres fan, and the Hightower Family requests that guests wear their favorite San Diego Padres shirt/jersey or a baseball shirt/jersey of their favorite team.  Or come as you would like.  If you are attending the service at Glen Abbey, there will be coffee, tea, water, and donuts/pastries/cookies provided at 8:30 AM prior to the service and at 11:00 AM following the service.

Irene was a wife, mother, mentor, colleague, and friend and will be missed by so many. She was a dedicated public servant and loved being an educator/principal. Her military upbringing was invaluable as the principal of a school with 100% population of military families.

AASD will be creating the Irene B. Hightower Scholarship for those who wish to donate in Irene’s name.  Details will be forthcoming next week.

Irene is survived by her loving husband, Lawrence Hightower (Gunnery Sergeant, US Marine Corps, Retired), sons Peyton and Trevor, as well as many other family members, friends, and colleagues.  If you wish to help the Hightower family during this difficult time, donations of DoorDash, Uber Eats or grocery store gift cards may be sent electronically to Lawrence at
gunnyht@icloud.com.  Condolences and/or physical gift cards may be sent to Lawrence Hightower and Family, 775 Stone Canyon Rd., Chula Vista, CA  91914.

Fly high and rest easy, our dear Irene. You truly made a difference in the lives of so many. You are missed and we love you.

AASD has learned of the passing of Joan “Joanie” Stewart Camana, a former SDUSD teacher and administrator.  She was a teacher at Gompers, Kearny and Patrick Henry and was a vice principal at Pershing and Crawford.  She then left SDUSD and later retired as the principal of Mt. Carmel High School in 2005 and continued to mentor new principals.  Our condolences to the family.

  • YOU CAN SUPPORT THE AASD SCHOLARSHIP FUND!  A NEW WAY TO DONATE AND SUPPORT GRADUATING SENIORS.  FOR THE COST OF A STARBUCKS COFFEE OR A VISIT TO FAST FOOD, YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR SCHOLARSHIP FUND!
For years, AASD has supported our members by providing $1000 scholarships to the children of our members who are graduating from high school and going on to higher education.  Each year, AASD awards between $15,000 and $18,000 in scholarships.  In lieu of holding an annual event to fund the scholarships, the AASD Scholarship Committee, co-chaired by Veronica Ortega and Mary Johnson, has created an opportunity for our Members in Good Standing and Affiliate Members to make a nominal donation via payroll deduction to the AASD Scholarship Fund.  With the support of our members, this option will allow our scholarship program to remain solvent and remain funded.

The AASD Board of Directors is encouraging all Members in Good Standing and Affiliate Members to consider donating via payroll deduction in support of our program.  By clicking the provided link or scanning the QR code below, members can make a donation 10 times a year (August through May) of either $3, $5, $10 or $20 per month via payroll deduction.

Link - AASD Scholarship Payroll Deduction
QR Code - Scholarship Payroll Deduction

Of course, any member (active or retired) can make a direct donation by sending a check to the AASD office or calling the office with a debit or credit card information.  Checks should be payable to "UASC Foundation," and in the memo, write “AASD Scholarship Fund.”  Additionally, those wanting to make a MONTHLY donation outside of the payroll system can set up “Bill Pay” through their bank.

AASD would also like to acknowledge that all dues paid by AASD Retired Members (annually or one-time lifetime) go directly to the AASD Scholarship Fund.

Thank you in advance for your support!  In order to continue the program without holding fundraising events we need your generosity!

  • IMPORTANT – ELECTRONIC LINK AVAILABLE!  FILL OUT YOUR AASD MEMBERSHIP RECOMMITMENT FORM NOW!  This information pertains to current AASD members who were AASD members prior to June 28, 2018.  It does NOT apply to Affiliate members or Retired members.  Many have asked how to “re-join” AASD in light of the Supreme Court Decision, Janus v. AFSCME.  If you were an AASD member on June 27, 2018, per the Decision, you automatically stayed as an AASD "Member in Good Standing" and will remain so.  However, we are asking all AASD members to re-commit to AASD by completing the Google form (link below). This re-confirms your AASD membership and ensures that you have access to the benefits of being an AASD member – legal representation, AASD representation, discounted services, scholarships for your children, professional development reimbursements, etc.

Some of you have already filled out the new membership form over the past year – if so, it is not necessary to complete it again.  If you have any questions regarding the re-commitment form, please contact the AASD office at 619-295-2118 or e-mail one of the AASD staff members for assistance.  Thank you in advance for your commitment to our Union – AASD.
