On March 24, 2009, the District’s Board of Education voluntarily recognized AASD as the exclusive representative of the Certificated and Classified supervisors, thereby enabling AASD to represent all Certificated and Classified supervisors in their employment relations with District. On July 1, 2017, Supervisory Members of the School Police Department were added and a Police Management Association (PMA) was formed within AASD. Those in positions designated as represented by AASD may elect to be “members in good standing.” Being a member in good standing qualifies a person for benefits including legal representation paid by AASD within the rules of the Constitution and Bylaws, access to additional insurances provided by American Fidelity through AASD membership, access to various services and products at a discounted rate, attendance at AASD-sponsored functions, ability to apply for scholarships for their children who are graduating seniors, ability to access the AASD Professional Growth fund and more.
Additionally, AASD offers Affiliate Membership to all aspiring Classified or Certificated employees and to any former or non-represented Classified or Certificated employee.
If you are a member of a religious body whose traditional tenets or teachings include objections to joining or financially supporting employee organizations, you shall not be required to join or financially support the AASD. Nevertheless, you are required to pay an amount equivalent to the AASD regular membership dues (currently .115% of your gross annual salary) from each of your salary or wage payments to a non-religious, non-charitable organization for 10 months.
Former members of AASD in good standing at the time of retirement from SDUSD can become retired members of AASD. There are two options for retired membership dues: 1. a one-time fee of $250 for lifetime retired membership, or 2. an annual fee of $50 per school year, payable each July. Retired dues shall be applied to the AASD Scholarship Fund. When past presidents or AASD staff members retire, they shall become honorary lifetime members of AASD. Retired members may attend all general membership meetings and social activities of AASD and receive all publications.
